Goal:

Students will learn how language and literature reflect their cultural origins through the study of the earliest known works of English literature to the study of Shakespearean drama and the writings of multicultural contemporary poets and novelists through five curriculum units.

Summer Reading

It is a Miami Beach Senior High Language Arts Department policy that all language arts students complete mandatory summer reading assignments. Summer reading assignments were posted on the school web site at the beginning of June-miamibeachhigh. - and were also distributed by eleventh grade English teachers at the end of last school year. All students are required to complete the summer reading assignments for the 2011 - 2012 school year and complete in class projects during the first weeks of school.

• Students will be required to purchase the following text - Othello(Folger Editions) – by William Shakespeare.

• Literature, British Literature, McDougal Littell, 2009

• Selected supplementary poems, stories and texts supplied by Mrs. Duval

• World Literature Reading List

• 1 soft 3 ring binder 11/2 inches

• Hole punch

• 5 dividers

• 5 sheet protectors

• Paper

• 1 spiral notebook

• One plastic pocket folder

• Red pen and a highlighter

Grading Criteria

• 35 %- Class work/Projects

• 35% - Tests/Essays

• 20% - Home Learning

• 10% - Mini-Tasks/Quizzes

• Late work will only be accepted in extenuating circumstances and must be accompanied by a note from a parent or guardian.

• No extra credit work is given in this class
