Kyles Temple African Methodist Episcopal Zion ChurchMay 21, 2017"Are we yet alive to see each other's face.To Kyles Temple A.M.E. Zion Church Family, Greetings, in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It has been an honor and a privilege to have served as chairperson and members of the Church Anniversary Committee. Our goal is to make this a day of thanksgiving for all that God has done these many years; and to acknowledge Kyles Temple A.M.E. Zion Church's achievements over the past year. Not only do we acknowledge the past year, we pause to remember our founding fathers and mothers for their vision and their faith to establish a house of worship that stands in the Oak Park community as a "symbol of hope". Their faith and belief inspired the generation following to construct this edifice where we worship 101 years later. To Rev. Gloria Clemons-white, we extend a heartfelt thank you for your confidence and support for allowing us to plan and implement the activities that lead up to today's celebration; and to the members, we are grateful for your continued support, you have always been there. To God Be the Glory for the things He has done, may He continue to shower His blessings upon us today, tomorrow, and for ever more.Your Sister-in-Christ,Sister Charlotte Muse-JohnsonChairperson, Anniversary Committee KYLES TEMPLE A.M.E. Kyles Temple African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (Kyles Temple) was organized in 1916 under the administration of Thomas Allen Harvey; he served as the church’s first pastor. The Board of Organizers were Bishop William W. Mathews, and the Reverends J. B. Holmes, H. L. Johnson, E. M. Clark, W. J. Byers, Isaac Hambright, and William J. Walls. Members from the Sacramento community were Carrie Mae Brent, John Brent, Sr., Julian Finance, Lonie Grey, Adronia Harvey (wife of the pastor), Elizabeth Jackson, Elizabeth McDonald, Robert E. McDonald, Pauline Paylor, Ruth Sterling, David W. Washington, and Stella Washington. Their children became members of the newly organized congregation. The history of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded February 13, 1909 in New York City. The NAACP organization created to work on the abolition for the abolition and segregation, and stop the lynching of African Americans. In August 1916, the Sacramento Branch of the NAACP was organized. Rev. Thomas Allen Harvey, Pastor of Kyles Temple AME Zion Church, was elected its first president. Citizens of Sacramento, largely through the churches, were asked for help in getting an anti-lynching bill through the United States Congress; protesting local activities of the Ku Klux Klan, and fighting against extremely negative media portrayal of people of African American descent. ABRIDGED HISTORYAccording to the history of the Sacramento Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); conditions in Sacramento were very poor for African Americans during this time. This civil rights organization began addressing other issues such as discrimination in jobs and housing; branches were started on the West Coast. Members of the early Kyles Temple were also subjected to this social and political environment. However, within the church spirits were raised as regular services were held. Sunday School, and other programs were started. A major social event which many church members attended, was the “Garbage Men’s Picnic.” Some African Americans could get regular jobs working in the Garbage Department of the City of Sacramento; from which they had previously been barred. Several church members were employed, and these were considered good jobs. During the administration of the Rev. David D. Mattocks, the church lot on 36th& Broadway was sold. With profit from the sale, the lot on 42nd Street was purchased, and the church building was moved to its present location. The building was remodeled, a social hall was added, furnished, and the debt was paid off. A parsonage was purchased in 1943, while Rev. J. Mayo Roberts was pasturing. Within 5 years, during the administration of the Rev. J. S. Thorne; the final payment was made on the parsonage, and the mortgage was burned. During the administration of the Rev. Morgan W. Tann, ground was broken for a new edifice on Thanksgiving Day, 1956. The cornerstone was laid with the participation of the D. D. Mattocks Masonic Lodge, named in honor of former pastor and community activist, Rev. David D. Mattocks. The old structure was moved to the back of the lot, and construction began on a new building, which the church now occupies. It was a financial and physical struggle for many church members. They spent many hours helping build the present edifice, and laying tile in the new Social Hall. Mr. Hiram McMurtry was heavily involved in the construction. His nephew John T. Wade work ABRIDGED HISTORYclosely with his uncle. They supervised many members in this project. They did countless other work around the church. The new building was completed under Rev. George Kendall. It was furnished, and a new organ was purchased. The church continued to progress with membership of new members. The Board of Bishops meeting was at Kyles Temple. The Rumford Fair Housing Bill was being debated in the California Legislature in 1963-64; civil rights demonstrations were conducting sit-ins in the State Capitol Rotunda. With the conference, theme of “Freedom,” Bishop Stephen G. Spotswood, then chairman of the NAACP National Board of Directors, used the influence of his position. The entire denomination to successfully fight for passage of this bill to insure fair housing for all people in this state. With succeeding pastors, advances have been made spiritually. Under the leadership of Rev. Robert L. Graham, who succeeded Dr. Taylor, new members were added. The Educational Building was refurbished; which was the old church that was originally at 36th & Broadway, it was moved to 42nd Street. With the passing of the last Charter Member, Sister Carrie Mae Brent, on May 2, 1973, this building was renamed the ‘CARRIE MAE BRENT EDUCATION BUILDING” as a tribute. The Men of Zion Board, an organization of men in the church, with Mr. Marion Dennis serving as President. This group of men provided financial assistance to the church. In addition, this Board serves the Church by mentoring young men to become the Men that God has called them to be (responsible young men of God.) Kyles Temple African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, the third oldest African American Church in Sacramento; celebrated its 100th anniversary. The celebration began on May 25 to May 29, 2016. The theme of the past occasion was “The Joy of Faithfulness: Remembering the Past, Rejoicing in the Present and Investing in the Future.” Scripture Hebrews 13:7-8.Kyles Temple “Ecclesiastic Tree”: Thomas Allen Harvey, T.W. ABRIDGED HISTORYThe small band of pioneering Charter Members, and those who have served and struggled throughout the years; they left a legacy and challenge for all of us to continue to work for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. For all our efforts and successes, we say loudly and with praise "To God Be The Glory." 533908024130 (Revised May 2017 by M.A. Jones-Wylie & C. The Church’s One FoundationThe Church’s one foundation Is Jesus Christ her Lord:She is His new creation By water and the word:From heaven He came and sought her To be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her, And for her life He died.Elect from every nation, Yet one o’re all the earth,Her charter of salvation, One Lord, one faith, one birth:One holy Name she blesses, Partakes one holy food,And to one hope she presses, With every grace endued.Mid toil and tribulation, And tumult of her war,She waits the consummation Of peace for evermore,Till, with the vision glorious, Her longing eyes are blest,And the great Church victorious Shall be the Church at rest.Yet she on earth hath union With God the Three in OneAnd mystic sweet communion With those whose rest is won:O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we,Like them, the meek and lowly, On high may dwell with Thee. A-men Is Your All On the Altar?Verses You have longed for sweet peace and for faith to increase, And have earnestly, fervently prayed; But you cannot have Rest or be perfectly blest Until all on the altar is laid.Would you walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, And have peace and contentment always? You must do His sweet Will to be free from all ill, On the altar your all must be lay.O we never can know what the Lord will be stow Of the blessings for which we have prayed Till our body and soul He doth fully control, And our all on the altar is laid.Who can tell all the love He will send from above Happy our hearts will be made; Of the fellowship sweet we will share at His feet When our all on the altar is laid.ChorusIs your all on the altar of sacrifice laid? Your heart does the Spirit control? You can only be blest and have peace and sweet rest As you yield Him your body and soul. My Hope Is Built on Nothing LessVersesMy hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus’ name. When darkness veils His lovely face I rest on His unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale, My anchor holds within the veil. His oath, His covenant, His blood, Support me in the whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay. When He shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in Him be found!Dressed in His righteousness alone, Faultless to stand before the throne!’ ChorusOn Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand. A-menSoftly and Tenderly Jesus Is CallingVersus Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling. Calling for you and for me:Patiently Jesus is waiting and watching, Watching for you and for meWhy should we tarry when Jesus is pleading, Pleading for you and for meWhy should we linger and heed not his mercies, Mercies for you and for me!O for the wonderful love He has promised, Promised for you and for meTho we have sinned, He has mercy and pardon, Pardon for you and for me.ChorusCome home (come home) Come home (Come home) Ye who are weary,Come home; Earnestly, tenderly Jesus is calling, Calling, O sinner, come home O How I Love JesusVersesThere is a name I love to hear, I love to sing its worth; It sounds like music in mine ear, The sweetest name on earth. It tells me of a Savior’s love, Who died to set me free; It tells me of His precious blood, The sinner’s perfect plea.It tells me what my Father hath In store for every day, And tho’ I tread a darksome path, Yields sunshine all the way.It tells of One whose loving heart Can feel my deepest woe, Who in each sorrow bears a part, That none can bear below.ChorusO, how I love Jesus, O, how I love Jesus, O, how I love Jesus, Because He first loved me!
