The people of the United Methodist Church of Geneva (UMCG) are a Great Commandment Church, loving God with all we have and are, loving our neighbors as we love ourselves. We seek to be a missional congregation, going to where our neighbors are, not waiting for them to come to us. The four key elements of our vision for ministry growth (spiritual formation for all ages, hands-on ministry, life-situation ministry, faith sharing) intersect significantly with youth ministry. Currently UMCG has an exciting opportunity for someone to share leadership in our youth ministry as Director of Youth Activities (part-time position with emphasis on week nights and week ends). This opportunity involves developing Christian discipleship activities for 5th grade through high school youth. Key responsibilities include:

• Plan, schedule, and administer Youth Activities Program (youth groups, retreats, mission trips, service projects) for 5th grade through high school in 3 age groups (5th-6th, 7th-8th, 9th-12th).

• Recruit, train, and supervise adult volunteers for youth activities.

• See that all youth ministry adheres to Safe Sanctuary policy.

• Clear communication with youth, parents, volunteers, and church staff.

• Prepare and oversee youth activity budget.

• Attend all Youth Council meetings and assist Youth Council chair in developing agendas.

• Partner with the Assistant Director of Christian Education to ensure synergy between Christian education and activities in youth ministry.

• Be available to youth outside of youth program hours; keep confidence.

• Facilitate relationships between youth and adults of the church.

• Guide youth on paths of Christian spiritual development.

The successful candidate for this role will demonstrate:

• A strong Christian faith and the ability to communicate the faith journey.

• Passion and energy to draw and nurture youth as Christian disciples.

• Maturity in maintaining personal and professional boundaries.

• The capacity and habit for collaborative relationships with adult volunteers and staff.

• Leadership skills

• Strong written and verbal communication ability.

• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects.

• Capacity to relate well with adults and youth along the Christian theological spectrum.

• Understanding of the spiritual growth dynamics of youth.

The Director of Youth Activities offers the successful candidate the opportunity to work a part time flexible schedule. It also provides the opportunity to work on a dynamic team while enjoying the challenge of creating new programs and administering current ones.

Our youth director is more like a full-time minister, but I thought this might be helpful.  I've attached the original job description from when we started looking for one, and then the "Functions" list is more  what he has actually done.  Thought you might find it interesting and helpful too.

Associate Youth Minister

Christ Church United Methodist

A. Purpose in Ministry

Our ministry exists to connect students with God and each other, to help them grow in faith, and to challenge and equip students for leadership and service in the Body of Christ.

B. Purpose of Position

Working under the direction of the minister to youth, the associate youth minister will have primary responsibility for youth Sunday school, small groups and confirmation. In addition he/she will participate in other aspects of the youth ministry. This is a full-time position in ministry.

• Have a solid biblical foundation.

• Have a minimum of two years youth ministry experience.

• Have a 4 year college degree.

• Relate well with both students and their families.

• Be a servant leader with excellent people skills, organizational abilities, and a talent for recruiting and utilizing volunteers.

• Earn respect and be able to maintain discipline.

• Have the emotional, physical and mental stamina to keep up with the fast pace of today’s youth.

D. Responsibilities

1. Initiate and lead small group ministry. The associate youth minister will develop and provide leadership for small groups in middle school and high school. This includes recruiting and equipping new leaders, placing students in small groups, supplying curriculum and supporting and recognizing leaders.

2. Coordinate youth Sunday school. The associate youth minister will build upon current strengths of the Sunday school ministry program. 4. Assist and support minister to youth. The associate youth minister will assist and support the minister to youth in planning and coordinating youth ministry programs and events. This includes Sunday night Vibe and Refuge, Wednesday night Bible studies, 5th Quarter recreation program, and outside events such as Ichthus, mission trips and retreats.

8. Pursue personal growth. The associate youth minister will continue to deepen his/her faith, strengthen his/her ties with friends and family, and develop strategies to avoid burnout through disciplines such as study, retreats, networking, Sabbath time, and the use of spiritual advisors.
