Super Yachts Are Calling: Dynamic Deckhands Wanted

[pic]

All over the world, young people (and not-so-young people) are discovering that being a deckhand on a super yacht is one of the most exciting and well-paid jobs around.

Imagine working and traveling on a gigantic luxury yacht owned by a billionaire. Imagine meeting top celebrities from the worlds of music, movies, sports and politics as you visit exotic ports of call such as St. Tropez, Martinique and the shimmering Greek Isles.

Yes, jobs like that really exist. And people like you are needed to fill them. But ... the agencies and individuals who do the hiring for those positions are seeing too many job candidates who just don't have what it takes. Sure, they might have the proper certifications. But they lack a certain ... dynamic quality, a gung-ho spirit that says they want to be the best deckhand ever.

This is where you can beat the competition. By becoming the "dynamic deckhand" that superyacht operators are desperately searching for, you can not only land that dream job, you will be well positioned to advance toward the first mate's or captain's seat, if that is what you want.

The Dynamic Deckhand Personality

[pic]

Yes, boat handling and maintenance skills are important in the world of superyacht crewing. At least as important (some would say more so!) is your image. Dynamic deckhands have a personal image, based in a certain personality type, that causes others to see them in a fun and professional way.

The good news is that if that image does not quite fit you at the moment, you can cultivate it; to some degree you can even "fake it 'til you make it!" Try to meet and hang out with yacht crew members. Observe them. See which ones are the group leaders that the others tend to gravitate toward. Study their body language, way of talking, their openness and confidence, etc. Chances are you will be seeing a truly dynamic deckhand whose personality you can "model."

Yes, image is that important in the yacht crew world. It will put you in good stead to work on your image fully as much as you do your boating skills.

Dynamic Deckhands Walk the Docks!

[pic]Dockwalking is one of the best ways to find and obtain a job on a superyacht. Yes, there are hiring agencies you can go through, but meeting working crew members and their captains is still one of the best ways to achieve employment in this industry.

Would-be dynamic deckhands learn the ins and outs of dockwalking and how to use it correctly to crush the competition for superyacht jobs. Believe it or not, there exist tested dockwalking strategies and methods that can help you beat the rest of the dockwalkers and bring you that extra cash - not to mention the adventure - that you are looking for. It is up to you to see out this knowledge and then put it into action!

You should also learn where the essential ports, docks and marinas are, particularly in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Did you know that in the Mediterranean, it is possible to approach the equivalent of some 14,000 yachts in three different countries within a single week? Then, there are some little known ports in that region that you could visit, and that could easily land you months of daywork and money simply because you showed up!

Dynamic Deckhands Get Wet!

[pic]

When you picture yourself working on a huge luxury yacht, you might imagine spending your days running up and down decks attending to various tasks but never coming in contact with the water on which your vessel drifts from port to port.

The truth is that dynamic deckhands get wet! If you want to stand out in this job and be the deckhand that everyone notices, you have to be comfortable in the water.

For example, you will want to learn to drive both jet and outboard tenders, or powerboats, in all types of weather. When you're powering your way through the ocean in one of these small boats, you're going to deal with frequent spray, especially if the sea is choppy. And when it storms you will really experience what a good soaking is!

Can you keep your head and wits about you when stinging water is hitting you from every direction? If you can manage the tender in the roughest of situations, you will make yacht owners and guests alike see you as a seasoned professional - possibly even someone to put on the fast track to captain.

Also, one of the jobs you are likely to be called on to do is to safely manage the affairs of your guests while doing water sports. Your goal will be to make sure they have the maximum enjoyment possible during their time aboard with you - including when you or out jetskiing or swimming with them.

If you love the water, then a deckhand job will definitely keep you in close touch with it!

Dynamic Deckhands Don't Fret about the Economy

[pic]

The world of the megayachts and superyachts floats serenely above the troubles of the global economy in which most people live.

It may surprise you to learn that recessions and economic slowdowns barely touch those who are rich or fortunate enough to own one of these huge floating pleasure boats. That isn't to say that an occasional owner might find that his fortune has suddenly hit the skids, and end up having to sell his beloved boat. But most people in that league have made sure to protect their wealth in such a way that that kind of misfortune is unlikely to ever sneak up on them.

The superyacht industry is as robust as ever. This means that once you get your foot in the door - or should we say, foot on deck - you can be virtually assured of steady work for as long as you want. On the other hand, you might face more competition in getting that crucial first job. The answer is simple: Become a dynamic deckhand and you will rise above everyone else, straight into the position of your choice.

Deckhand Job Opportunities - Where Are They?

[pic]

So, you want to work as a deckhand on a boat. Great! Being a member of a vessel's crew will provide you with a really great lifestyle and the chance to travel and be paid for it. But where do you find deckhand job opportunities?

The easy answer is: anywhere there are boats. But if you want the best chance of getting on the best boats - which most people will agree would be a megayacht or a superyacht - you must be more selective about your job hunting. Luxury yacht owners and their captains tend to gravitate to a few certain ports and resort areas known for their social life, well-developed infrastructure, and high-end amenities.

This lens will give you a general idea of where to go in the world for a job as a deckhand on a yacht. It's up to you to get there. Good luck!

Deckhand Job Opportunities: The Mediterranean

[pic]

The ports and resorts of the Mediterranean Sea are the best places by far to seek superyacht employment, rivaled only by those of the Caribbean. The rich and super rich of Europe and, indeed, the rest of the world, flock to these glittering waterholes by the thousands. And, of course, they bring their yachts.

The Mediterranean coast of France is the most famous, but don't forget that of Spain, Italy, Greece, and nowadays even such places as Croatia. In fact, one of the things that makes job-hunting around the Mediterranean so attractive is that you can visit so many different countries in such a short span of time. This will greatly enhance your chances of obtaining employment on a boat.

If you're serious about seeking deckhand job opportunities, you'll find them easily all around the Mediterranean.

Click here for the definitive, updated guide to getting a deckhand job on a luxury yacht:

Deckhand Job Opportunities: The Caribbean

[pic]

The islands of the Caribbean Sea are second only to the Mediterranean coast as a superyacht mecca and, hence, as a place to go to find work as a deckhand on a luxury boat. (And don't forget the Bahamas, either, although technically they're in the Atlantic, not the Caribbean.)

If you live in North America, you might find that getting to the Caribbean is easier and cheaper than getting to the yachtie playgrounds of Europe. If that's the case, no worries! There's a year-round boating scene in almost all of the resort-oriented islands here. You can most assuredly find the deckhand job opportunity of your dreams somewhere in these sunny isles.

Deckhand Job Opportunities: Australia

[pic]

Australia is famous for its yachting scene. The world knows about its famous yacht races, such as the Sydney-to-Hobart event. Aside from yacht racing, the Land Down Under is enjoying a growing reputation as both a home and a destination for the captains of superyachts.

Although boat jobs will not be quite as plentiful as you'd find in the Mediterranean or Caribbean, they won't be scarce, either. You may need to be more persistent here and plan and doing a bit more dockwalking, but deckhand job opportunities do exist.

Have a positive attitude and keep looking. You'll find what you're looking for; after all, that's why people come to "Oz," isn't it? (Oh, and don't neglect New Zealand, either. It has its own burgeoning yacht scene as well.)

Deckhand Job Opportunities: The South Pacific

[pic]Just say "South Pacific" and immediately your mind is flooded with romantic images of swaying palm trees, hula dancers, emerald-green lagoons and adventures in Paradise. Naturally, you might think that yachting would be big here. And you'd be right, up to a point.

The problem is that the islands of the Pacific are scattered over such a huge expanse of ocean that it is not so easy or inexpensive to "hop" from one to another. If you find yourself in one of the many island paradises, it won't hurt to ask around about a crew job. Deckhand opportunities do arise; you just have to be in the right place at the right time.

Deckhand Job Opportunities: North America

[pic]

Yachting is popular on both the East and West coasts of North America, but the superyachts, which tend to offer the most frequent job opportunities, are more likely to be spotted down in the Caribbean.

Nevertheless, it doesn't hurt to look. Try Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles on the West Coast of the U.S., and around Cabo near the tip of Baja California in Mexico. On the East Coast of the U.S., you might find a superyacht or two in port in New York or Boston Harbor; Miami and Ft. Lauderdale are excellent hunting grounds, of course. Along the Mexican Caribbean, try Islas Mujeres.

Deckhand Job Opportunities: South America

[pic]

You would think that with so many miles of coast and so many famous resorts and big port cities, that South America would be a superyacht haven. Although the situation is changing, that is not quite true, unfortunately.

Still, people have found deckhand job opportunities in this fascinating continent. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is a likely spot for finding a vessel to climb aboard as a crew member. In fact, Brazil in general is your best best in South America for finding superyachts that may be looking to take on new deckhands.

Aside from Brazil, your best opportunity may be in Argentina. Buenos Aires is the place to go to try your luck in this country.

Deckhand Job Opportunities: Southeast Asia

[pic]Southeast Asia is one of those on-again, off-again places when it comes to favorite yachting destinations. Some of the world's most beautiful beaches are to be found here, as are some of the most exciting resorts. Fishing is great, too. On the other hand, a recent history of natural disasters and political turmoil in some of this region's countries keeps many yachties away.

Thailand remains the likeliest place to pick up work on a superyacht. The Philippines are also a possibility, and the paradisaical isle of Bali beckons as well. Prediction: Keep an eye on up-and-coming places such as Vietnam and China's Hainan Island - they're almost certain to have their own yachting scenes in the not-too-distant future.

What Training Is Required for Yacht Crew Jobs?

In general, to crew on a superyacht, whether as a deckhand or as a steward or stewardess, you have to have something called STCW'95 BST certification. It is not hard to obtain this certification, but be prepared to put some time and effort into it. Once you have it, it is your key to yacht crew jobs around the world. (See The Dynamic Deckhand for more information.)

You must also obtain a medical certificate attesting to your good health before you can work on most boast, including the superyachts.

Where Can I Find Yacht Crew Jobs?

[pic]

You will want to get yourself to the ports of calls where the superyachts congregate. Depending on where you currently reside, this could be the biggest hurdle to overcome - particularly if one of the reasons you want a yacht crew job is because you don't have the money to travel!

If you have your certification and a good resume showing some experience as a boat deckhand or other crew, you might be able to secure a job from your home, even if you're in the middle of Nebraska. But usually, you do need to figure out a way to get to the megayacht ports.

Superyachts can be found all over the world. They tend to be concrated in a few specific areas, though. Your best chance at finding an abundance of yacht crew jobs is in the Caribbean or the Mediterranean. There are a growing number of opportunities along the coasts of North America, Asia and the South Pacific, as well.

Are Yacht Crew Jobs Really to Be Had?

Believe it or not, owners and operators of superyachts face a current shortage of good crew members. If you're an engineer or a chef, you can be assured of a job afloat; in fact, you'll practically be able to name your price! But even if your skills aren't so specialized, you can still land a job as a boat deckhand, steward or stewardess.

There's a yacht crew job out there for you, if you have proper training and a good attitude. Training is easy to come by. Attitude is up to you!

Are There Yacht Crew Jobs for Women as Well as Men?

[pic]

Women are in high demand aboard superyachts, and not only as stewardesses. Many women work on yacht crews as deckhands, assistant engineers, chef's assistants and chefs. Don't underestimate your strengths or sell yourself short when applying for a job on a luxury boat. Women are well represented, at all levels, in today's superyacht industry.

(Ladies: Don't tell the guys this, but many yacht captains these days actually prefer female crew members. They view them as being more reliable overall. Whether that's true or not, that's the perception. Might as well take advantage of it!)

Any Other Tips for Getting A Yacht Crew Job?

Attitude has already been mentioned, but it's worth repeating. You should have (or be able to summon up) a confident, cheerful air. In many yacht crew jobs you will be interacting with VIP guests and dignitaries, as well as the captain, other crew, and perhaps the yacht's owner as well. And although a superyacht can be huge, it's still a boat - you'll need to get along (preferably happily) with a group of people you're rubbing shoulders with night and day.

And then there's work ethic. Too many people sign on for yacht crew jobs thinking they're getting a paid vacation. While working aboard a superyacht has many aspects of a vacation, keep in mind that you're there to work. You'll be expected to commit yourself to the same kind of effort you would exert in any other job.

Yacht crew jobs are not all fun and games. Do your work well, strive to be a "dynamic deckhand" or "super steward," and you'll have plenty of opportunities to relax and let loose!

Yacht? Mega Yacht? Super Yacht?

Wikipedia says:

A yacht is a recreational boat. ... Yachts are differentiated from working ships mainly by their leisure purpose.

Yacht lengths generally range from 40 feet (13 m) up to hundreds of feet. Luxury craft smaller than 40 feet are more commonly called "cabin cruisers" or simply "cruisers." A mega yacht generally refers to any yacht (sail or power) above 100 ft (34 m) and a super yacht generally refers to any yacht over 200 ft (70 m).

Tips for Getting A Boat Deckhand Job

[pic]

Being a deckhand on a boat, being a valued member of the crew, traveling to exotic ports of call: It's all possible. People just like you are living this great deckhands' lifestyle right now.

There are a few very important tips you need to know if you want to land boat deckhand jobs. Take these to heart and you will increase your chances of joining the boat crewing life a hundredfold.

Look the Part of a Boat Deckhand - the Kind Yachtsmen Hire

[pic]

You might think that your appearance has little to do with getting a boat deckhand job. Wrong!

Although people may associate a certain laid-back casualness or even scruffiness with those who hang around docks and work on boats, in truth many boat owners and captains want crew who look neat. This is especially true for the luxury yachts and so-called superyachts, which is where the best jobs in this business happen to me.

Now no one expects you to wear a tie and suit to interview for a deckhand job! That would not be looking the part, either. A clean and neat polo shirt (not a tank top), slacks (not cut-off jeans), and dock shoes (not sandals) make up the look to aim for.

"Dock rats" might be the term that some folks use for people who crew on boats and spend their off time making the rounds of waterfront bars. But that doesn't mean it's acceptable to look ratty.

Landing a deck job on a sleek and exciting luxury boat will be well worth the time and small expense of sprucing up a bit.

Use A Crew Agency to Find Boat Deckhand Jobs

[pic]Crew recruitment agencies should never be overlooked in your search for deckhand employment.

These agencies are experts when it comes to matching prospective deckhands and other boat crew with the right yacht captain or company.

Just remember that when you walk into a crew agency office, you might be competing with dozens or even hundreds of other hopefuls. How you look, your attitude (preferably confident but not smug), and the way you interact with the agency screener will go a long way toward deciding whether you get an actual interview for a position on a boat crew.

Crew agencies may be found in ports around the world. If it's an upscale crewing experience you want, you should try to get yourself to a resort-type port, where the super yachts and mega yachts tend to be found. An agency in one of these so-called "millionaire's playgrounds" can hook you up with the deckhand job of your nautical dreams.

Go Where the Yachties Go to Find Boat Deckhand Jobs

[pic]

If you want a job on a superyacht, try hanging out with the yachties. Makes sense, doesn't it? As with most other careers, networking and making connections will take you a long way in this business.

When in port and not on their boats, deckhands and captains alike gravitate to certain bars and restaurants. Even if you're new in town, you can ask around to find these places. The great thing about yachtie ports of call is that they're usually extremely laid-back places where it's easy to strike up many friendly conversatons.

Ask everyone you meet if they happen to know of any boat deckhand jobs. Don't pester the same people over and over about it, but don't be shy either. Shyness will not get far in the yachtie environment.

One caution: The eyes and ears of the yachting industry are everywhere. Just as this can work in your favor for finding a job as a boat deckhand, it can work against you if you sabotage yourself through bad behavior. One too many beers in a bar could cause you to say or do something embarrassing, perhaps in plain view and hearing of potential employers. A word to the wise!

Assess Your Boat Deckhand Job Skills Realistically

[pic]

One aspect of being a boat deckhand, especially in the yacht world, is that you never stop learning. No one in this business ever knows it all - so never pretend that you do. If you do land a deckhand's job by overselling your experience or skills, it will come back to haunt you.

Picture this. A candidate for a yacht crew position saunters in to a crewing agency bubbling with self-confidence. He tells the interviewer, yes, he has years of experience as a deckhand on many different kinds of boats. The interviewer nods, then suddenly pulls out a length of rope and asks the job candidate to tie a common nautical knot. The candidate is unable to do it. Interview over! This has actually happened before.

Learn as much as you can about boat deckhanding. Get as much hands-on training and experience as possible. Then, when you interview for a job, put your best foot forward - but don't exaggerate. It's much more important to show that you have the right attitude and a genuine interest in learning what it takes to make it in a boat deckhand job.

Create A Resume that Beats the Competition for Boat Deckhand Jobs

[pic]"A resume? I have to have a resume?"

Newcomers to the yachting and boat crewing industry are often surprised to hear that they need to present a formal resume or CV in order to get a deckhand job. While being able to enjoy a casual lifestyle - and get paid for it! - is one of the attractions of this line of work, it is still work. That means that captains and first mates want to have a nice, complete, neatly typed resume on their desk before they start interviewing you.

Potential boat deckhand employers want to see the same basic things in a resume that employers in any industry want to see: A complete work history (no gaps!), a good and appropriate photograph, sufficient references, etc. And neatness does count!

The good news is that far too many applicants in this industry take a sloppy or hurried approach to creating a resume. Take the time to craft a really good looking and complete resume, and you will be head and shoulders above the competition for your desired boat deckhand job.

Get A Boat Job - Yes, You!

[pic]

For people like me, nothing can compare to being out in a boat on the open sea - unless it's being aboard a boat that is docked in some exciting port of call.

It is possible to live on and around boats and make a living at sea, even if you are not a boat owner yourself. Get a boat job and the ocean is your oyster!

Jobs afloat are not difficult to come by. And these days they are not restricted by age or sex, so long as you are in good health. Depending on the specific boat job, you may need some training or, in some cases, special certifications. Don't let this scare you. There are many formal and informal ways to get all the training you need to get a boat job that will make your dreams of adventure come true.

This lens lists a few types of boat jobs that you might get. This is only a sampling.

I have worked at most of these. Today I spend all my time as a crew member aboard a superyacht. Quite frankly, I consider it to be the best boat job there is.

Get A Boat Job - Sport Fishing Guide

[pic]If you live in a coastal resort area (or are willing to move to one), you could get a boat job as a sportsfishing guide. The captains of sport fishing boats need enthusiastic, able-bodied crew members to help their paying guests with rigging fishing tackle, netting the catch, giving expert advice, and many other tasks.

Sport fishing boats go out almost every day in good weather to search for the "big ones" such as sailfish and marlin. If you know your way around a boat you can be assured of virtually steady employment on a sport fishing vessel. And if you know a lot (or can learn a lot) about hauling in those prized specimens of fish, you will be sought after as an expert fishing guide.

Get A Boat Job - Commercial Fisherman

[pic]

Spending a summer aboard a commercial fishing vessel is something that everyone should try, at least once.

You can get a boat job with one of the huge trawlers working the coasts of the Atlantic or Pacific and experience a slice of working life few others will ever know. For sure, being a commercial fisherman is strenuous and often exhausting work. And you will get soaked to the bone as you maneuver around a slippery deck, helping to haul in those big nets to make your daily quota of catch.

I wouldn't trade my own stint on a commercial fishing boat for anything. It taught me the meaning of putting in a day's work and the feeling of pride of being able to pull my load. Honestly, though, I'm glad I eventually found other options for working on a boat - such as the glamorous superyacht position I now hold. The folks who spend their entire lives in commercial fishing have my undying admiration.

Get A Boat Job - Tour Guide (Pirate?)

[pic]

All over the world there are companies that ferry tourists around on boats. The boats take vacationers cruising around busy harbors, with guides pointing out important sights. Or, they may take them to a nearby island for a day of birdwatching or lazing on a beautiful beach.

There are dinner cruises, where the whole point is for a boat's guests to dine on delicious food while watching dolphins play or the sun sets into the ocean. There are even pirate cruises, in which costumed bucanneers climb aboard and "attack" the tourists - just for the fun of it, of course.

You could get a boat job as a crew member on one of these tourist boats. For many of the positions, no special training or experience is needed. It's the perfect job for a college student on summer break.

If you bone up on the natural and manmade history of an area, you could even become the person who talks over the loudspeaker, making sure the passengers don't miss anything important. Hey ... maybe you could be a pirate!

Get A Boat Job - Diving Guide

[pic]

This job is similar to being a sportsfishing guide or a crew member of a tour boat, except that you are taking SCUBA divers to prime diving spots in your area.

To get a boat job in this niche, you need to know where the underwater sights are that excite divers, such as coral reefs, unusual underwater formations, and old shipwrecks.

Besides ferrying divers out to sea, you might be called on to help beginners and novices with the finer points of SCUBA diving safety and techniques. You will need to be familiar with diving equipment and be able to do safety inspections on it. You will also need to refill air tanks as needed.

Although it's possible to get a job on a diving boat without knowing a lot about the sport, to be of maximum value - and make the most money - you should get SCUBA certified yourself. You won't regret it - it's a great pastime!

Get A Boat Job - Superyacht Deckhand

[pic]

Of all the boat-related jobs I can think of, this is the absolute best.

Superyachts - those huge pleasure vessels whose owners are often the multimillionaires and billionaires that you hear about in the news - need crew members all the time. You can get a boat job on a superyacht as a steward or steward, an exterior deckhand, a chef, a first mate, or even (with training and experience) as the captain.

Imagine seeing the world aboard a luxury boat and getting paid for it, while getting your room and food for free as part of the bargain. Also, most yachts today provide health insurance, accident insurance, and so forth. If you feel the need to spend money, you can save it for the markets and shops of the many exotic ports of call that you will be visiting.

Superyacht jobs require work, of course. But it's work that you'll enjoy learning to do, involving real-world skills that will make you a valuable and sought-out member of the crew. You'll also make incredible friendships, and who knows - you could even find romance afloat. It has been known to happen!

If you would like to work on a superyacht, you can start by seeking out all of the information you can. Find out what training you will need. Also, learn about the kind of person who does best as a superyacht crew member - it's as much about personality as it is specific skills.

Good luck, and I hope I'll be seeing you ... at sea!
