Supply Conservation Tips and TricksThe Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has been declared a Public Health emergency of International Concern by the World Health Organization and the United Stated Department of Health and Human Services. During such events it is important to conserve limited resources, such as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Specific PPE is necessary for team members to wear while providing care to patients suspected or confirmed with infection. In addition, masks are necessary for potentially contagious persons to wear while in Advocate Aurora Health Care facilities. The Purpose: of this document is to provide guidance on supply conservation and things our organization must do to effectively steward our resources.Every PPE item, specifically N95’s, will be critical to conserve during this flue season, reminders:Do not waste PPEDo not store PPE in non-designated locations where it may be taken or lostIf you see evidence of waste or inappropriate use report immediately to your supervisor and Supply ChainDo not wear PPE inappropriately in the halls (ex. Gloves)Do not take PPE from one location to be used in another unapproved location (ex. from hospital to clinic)Masks & Other PPE Conservation TechniquesDo not house masks in flu kiosks/cough stations/respiratory hygiene stations. These should be kept behind department check in desks, information desks, etc. See flu kiosks/cough stations/respiratory hygiene stations SBAR for effective way to implement.Institute a daily review of patients that are in isolation housewide, to evaluate if a patient can come out of precautions or isolation that no longer may need itImplement lean practices to reduce amount of team members going into patient isolation rooms and reduce unnecessary team members from accessing a room (Ex. Food and Nutrition, Residents, multiple different nurses, etc.). Group tasks together to reduce in & outs from room. See Lean Coronavirus Operations Process SBAR for more guidanceReserve procedure masks (ear-loops) for patients exhibiting symptoms only. Do not leave any PPE boxes of supplies unattended in a public space for any reason. Secure masks with team members and make them available upon request. See Constrained Supply SBAR for more guidanceImplement just in time fit testing for N95. After the team member receives their fit test, give them the fit testing N95 as their “first use device”. Put in brown sack with their name on the bagDo not give N95s to patients to wearTeam members should not use gowns or linen as warm up jackets or other unnecessary reasonsLimit simulations where PPE is utilized ................
