First Aid Lesson Plan

Content: Adventure/Outdoor Education

Grade Level: 9-12

Class Time Frame: Block scheduling, 1.5 hr.

GOALS

• The students will be able to identify the proper first aid survival skills and supplies needed to successfully get through a dangerous situation. With different situations the students will be able to explain the procedures necessary to survive in the wilderness.

• The students will be able to keep calm and collected when presented with a survival situation. They will be able to make rational decisions without panicking or losing control of their emotions.

• The students will be able to demonstrate survival techniques such as splinting a broken bone, applying pressure and supplies to stop bleeding, or treating a burn/wound/sting/bite. They will demonstrate the knowledge and physical ability to carry out the survival procedures.

OBJECTIVES

1. The students will be able to identify and use first aid supplies effectively and correctly with 85% accuracy.

2. The students will be able to demonstrate a calm, collected mentality 90% of the time when presented with a survival situation.

3. The student will be able to physically demonstrate survival techniques effectively and correctly 100% of the time when presented with a survival situation.

TEKS

116.53 Adventure & Outdoor Education

• c4D – The student is expected to explain and follow safety procedures during adventure/outdoor education activities.

• c4E – The student is expected to list and describe safety equipment used in outdoor activities.

• c3A – The student is expected to select and participate in adventure/outdoor education activities that provide for enjoyment and challenge.

INTRODUCTION

Teacher will present a situation to the class where First Aid and survival skills are needed. She will ask the class what they would do in a situation like that and to write it down. Class will then discuss what they would do in the situation. (10 minutes)

LESSON PRESENTATION

1. Teacher will distribute Outdoor Survival and First Aid Handbooks to students and will introduce and discuss with them the proper techniques and procedures for Safety & First Aid in the outdoors. (25 minutes)

2. Students will come up in pairs and with teacher guidance will demonstrate proper First Aid techniques for whole class. (20 minutes)

3. The teacher will then split students into small groups with First Aid supplies to practice survival procedures on group members. Members will help each other to remember proper procedures. (15 minutes)

4. Students will return to seats and students will now come up randomly at teacher request to demonstrate a First Aid technique chosen at random by the teacher. Paired students will execute the procedure and then after they are done their classmates can offer input on what they should or shouldn’t have done to do it correctly. (20 minutes)

STUDENT PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

• Students will participate in discussions in both whole class and small group situations.

• Students will demonstrate knowledge of survival and First Aid skills.

• Students will work cooperatively with partners and group members during activities and discussions.

• Students will remain on task during activities.

• Students will respect teacher and peers during activities.

GUIDED PRACTICE

• Teacher will initially guide students through proper procedures when first learning proper techniques.

• Students will guide each other during small group work.

• Teacher will monitor group work by surveying the room during the activity.

RE-TEACH

• Students will correct each other during group work.

• Class discussion after each demonstration to provide feedback about how the procedure was executed.

CLOSURE

• Students will discuss importance of survival and First Aid skills with outdoor/adventure activities.

• Teacher will ask students if it is okay for some people to know First Aid and survival skills or if all people participating in outdoor activities should know them.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

• Students will be able to work with the bulletin board as an extension either individually or in small groups/pairs.

ASSESSMENT

• Peer assessment: Students will assess each other in small groups working on the survival skills. They will be correcting each other as their group members are practicing.

• Performance assessment: Teacher will observe how well students have learned content by how well they perform the survival techniques when asked to demonstrate them at random.

MATERIALS

• Paper to write on

• Pen/pencil

• Outdoor Survival & First Aid Handbooks (1 per student)

• First Aid supplies (enough for several small groups)
