Bladder Cancer Canada

Name/Address of Mayor/Clerk

Your Honour,

I/We am/are writing on behalf of Bladder Cancer Canada (BCC) to request a proclamation from the City of [fill in name], declaring May as Bladder Cancer Awareness Month.

This would make a tremendous impact on our awareness efforts on behalf of all persons throughout your community and Canada who suffer with this lesser-known and under-funded cancer.

Although most people have never heard of bladder cancer, surprisingly it is the 5th most common cancer in Canada – 4th among men and 12th among women. There are an estimated 80,000 bladder cancer patients in Canada and about 9,000 more are diagnosed every year.

The most common symptom of bladder cancer is blood in the urine (hematuria), occurring in more than 80% of cases. Other symptoms may include bladder spasms, increased frequency and urgency of urination, and burning sensation during urination.

Unfortunately, due to the current lack of awareness of bladder cancer, the somewhat "generic" symptoms outlined above often get mistaken for other less serious illnesses and conditions and patients therefore experience significant delays in receiving lifesaving treatments.

I/We am/are… [insert your connection to BCC, a bit of your personal story here, make sure to list any involvement in support groups, BCC etc.].

For more information about BCC and this request, please feel free to contact me directly.

Kind regards,
