Brown Vs. Board of Education

Thurgood Marshall represented the NAACP in its attempt to over turn segregation in schools. Chief Justice Earl Warren decided that Plessey vs. Fergusson did not guarantee equal education.

Miranda Vs. Arizona

Chief Justice Earl Warren decided that accused persons must have protection from self incrimination. The case created “Miranda Rights.” Police must inform a person of his / her rights as they are being arrested. This expands the rights included in the 5th Amendment

Gideon Vs. Wainwright

The Supreme Court decides that a person must be granted a lawyer if they cannot afford one. It expands the rights included in the 6th Amendment

Mapp Vs. Ohio

The Supreme Court upholds the 4th Amendment with its decision. The Court states that property may not be seized without a proper search warrant.

Tinker Vs. DesMoines

Students are covered by the Bill of Rights while at school unless they infringe upon the rights of others or disrupt education. The case upholds the 1st Amendment.
