Job Description

Position Title: Veterinary Technician

Reports to: Executive Director

Job Type: Non-Exempt / PT

Schedule / Hours: 16-30 hours/week – varies. Flexibility to cover shifts. One Saturday per month. Ask for more details

Location: 5335 JD Johnson Road Peyton, CO

Purpose: Veterinary Technicians, under the direct oversight of the Veterinarian on staff and working with the Veterinary Team, assist with the medical care, treatment, and surgical procedures of dogs in National Mill Dog Rescue’s care.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

• Veterinary Medical Care

o Monitor the health of rescue dogs in conjunction with the medical team.

o Administer vaccines and other preventative medical treatments as outlined by NMDR medical protocols.

o Prepare patients for spay/neuter surgery, assist in surgery and monitor anesthesia under the direction of the veterinarian.

o Perform venipuncture, IV catheter placement, and drug & fluid calculations as ordered by the vet.

o Perform intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.

o Clean and pack surgical instruments

o Assist veterinarians and other technicians in performing procedures.

o Administer medications to animals as directed by veterinarians.

o Operate an autoclave.

o Follow veterinary care protocols including medical, behavior and general care protocols for the health and well-being of the dogs. Trim nails and clean ears on every dog when in surgery.

o Clean the vet room, according to protocol, after every surgery day.

o Facilitate good working relationships through teamwork and collaboration.

o Order supplies for the vet room in a timely manner and keep supervisor informed about equipment needs.

o Maintain a clean/sterile environment according to medical standards in surgery areas.

o Assure all medical instruments are sterile and in working order prior to any procedures.

o Ensure all dogs are safe to be released before leaving the building.

o Adhere to all Vet Team Policies and Procedures.

• Administrative Duties

o Ensure the vet room and paperwork is in order before the veterinarian arrives.

o Maintain and create patient records by accurately recording treatments, medications, examinations and test results on patient charts and other medical records.

o Participate in regular meetings with supervisor.

• Customer Service

o Admit and release dogs from the kennel in a responsive, courteous, and tactful manner to both internal and external customers.

o Inform families of any pertinent medical information on the dog’s care - - communicate release instructions.

o Provide quality customer service to families, volunteers, and staff while actively promoting our mission, services, programs, and events.

o Promote donation and giving opportunities as appropriate.

o Represent National Mill Dog Rescue in a professional and courteous manner at all times.

• Safety

o Ensure a safe work environment by following all safety guidelines and modeling safe work practices.

o Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, customer, animal, or the organization at risk

• Volunteers

o Work cooperatively with all volunteers and realize the talent and commitment they bring to National Mill Dog Rescue.

Skills and Experience

• Two years’ experience as a Veterinary Technician or a Certified Veterinary Technician degree. 

• Experience in caring for and handling animals in a safe, effective, and humane manner.

• Knowledge of basic dog physiology, anatomy, and behavior.

• Must be experienced with humane animal handling and restraint techniques of healthy or ill dogs.

• Provide excellent customer service via phone, email and in person.

• Relate and work with a diverse public; team player essential.

• Must be able to work in a fast paced environment with ability to successfully juggle multiple tasks and demands.

• Ability to professionally advocate National Mill Dog Rescue’s positions on issues.

• Ability to understand and communicate pertinent medical information to volunteers, family, and staff.

• Self-motivated and able to initiate and complete task.

• Moderate knowledge of medical terminology.

• Work is performed in an animal veterinary/surgery center

• Frequent bending, reaching, and kneeling

• Exposure and use of medical and surgical instruments

• Regular lifting of up to 50 pounds without assistance

• Potential for standing on feet for full shift

• Will be asked to hold, clean, carry and restrain animals - subject to animal bites and scratches

• Exposure to disinfectant solutions while in kennel and treatment areas.

• Consistently exposed to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available.

• While performing essential duties of this job, employee may be exposed to noxious odors, fumes or airborne particles, allergens, toxic or caustic chemicals; and potentially volatile situations which can present risk of violence or injury.
