Strategic directionAustralia is a modest but highly regarded donor to Bhutan. Education (SDG4) remains the central pillar of the bilateral development cooperation program. The goal of Australian development cooperation with Bhutan is to build human resources and institutional capacity, in a way that supports gender equality. We are: building human capacity (SDG1 and SDG4) throughAustralia Award scholarships enhancing tertiary education through Bhutan’s Royal Institute of Management andstrengthening technical and vocational education and training (TVET), andworking with the International Planned Parenthood Federation to support gender equality (SD5) and women’s empowerment (SDG10). Program highlights During the COVID-19 outbreak, Australia provided personal protective equipment to frontline Bhutanese health workers.The Australia Awards program is supporting public and private sector leadership across a range of sectors. In 2020, we offered 13 long-term scholarships (2 completed, 11 continuing via online platforms in Australia), and in 2021 we are offering 11 new long-term scholarships. We also delivered two short courses: Women in Executive Leadership and a regional course on Promoting Resilient and Sustainable Infrastructure Development.Our advocacy and programs in the community supported women’s empowerment by addressing gender-based violence, and sexual and reproductive health.We are also supporting Bhutan through the Australian Volunteers Program.
