Sunday Drama

Poldark rides again!

Almost 40 years

ago Captain Ross

Poldark galloped

across the TV

screens of millions of

PBS viewers, vexing

villains and winning

female hearts in

"Poldark," one of

Masterpiece's earli-

est hit series. Now the

gallant captain rides

Demelza and Ross Poldark

again in a thrilling new version with all the action, adventure, and

romance of the original in seven new episodes on Masterpiece.

Aidan Turner stars as Ross Poldark, a redcoat who returns to

Cornwall after the American Revolutionary War to discover that

his father is dead, his lands are ruined, and his true love is about

to marry his first cousin. Also starring is Eleanor Tomlinson as the

fiery servant Demelza, a strong-willed miner's daughter who runs away

from home and finds refuge in Poldark's enlightened household.

Poldark is based on a beloved series of novels by Winston Gra-

ham. The first, Ross Poldark, was published in 1945; the last, Bella

Poldark, appeared in 2002, the year before Graham's death. All

twelve are subtitled A Novel of Cornwall and trace the fortunes of a

landed, mine-owning family in windswept Cornwall two centuries ago.

The new series opens with a prologue in Virginia in 1781, when

Captain Poldark's regiment is ambushed by the local militia fight-

ing for independence. After the war and with a scar across his face as

a souvenir, he goes home to Cornwall, where his real struggle begins.

"Poldark" on Masterpiece airs Sundays at 8:00 p.m. beginning

the 21st and repeats Fridays at 10:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Sun-

days at 7:00 p.m. beginning the 21st and repeats Mondays at 8:00

a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The Forsyte Saga

The Forsyte Saga, the dazzling 13?part British television drama of class, sex, and power, returns to public television. Based on John Galsworthy's novel of the same name, The Forsyte Saga chronicles the lives of an English family over 34 years from the Victorian era through World War I.

Superior, arrogant, and confident, the Forsytes are the ultimate power family. What lies beneath is a festering core of unhappy and brutal relationships, riddled with tensions and jealousy. The protagonist of the saga is Soames Forsyte (Damian Lewis): at 31, Soames is a rich, successful partner in the family law firm. His fiery, tormented relationship with his beautiful wife Irene (Gina McKee), is at the heart of the saga. Her life changes forever when she meets Philip Bosinney (Ioan Gruffudd), an architect hired by Soames to build a country house, and they fall in love.

The Forsyte Saga, a classic of English literature, was originally published in three volumes from 1906?1920. It painted a fascinating picture of early twentieth century London life, and helped win the author John Galsworthy the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1932.

The Forsyte Saga can be seen Sundays at 6:00 p.m. beginning the 14th. On HD3-1, it airs Mondays at 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. beginning the 1st.

Last Tango in Halifax III

The critically acclaimed

British drama Last Tango

in Halifax returns for a

third season.

The six-part series tells

the story of love-struck sep-

Celia and Alan

tuagenarians Alan (Derek Jacobi) and Celia (Anne

Reid) who rediscover their love for each other later in

life--60 years, in fact, after they first met.

As the third season begins, Celia and Alan are plan-

ning to make the most of their time together when a sur-

prise visitor forces Alan to think about his past and keep

a secret from Celia, which is bound to backfire.

Last Tango in Halifax will be broadcast Sundays

at 7:00 p.m. beginning the 28th. On HD3-1, it can be

seen Sundays at 9:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. beginning the

28th.

Crimson Field

The hopes, fears, triumphs, and tragedies of WWI's frontline medics come together in a new drama, Crimson Field. In a tented field hospital on the coast of France, doctors, nurses, and women volunteers work together as a team to heal the bodies and souls of men wounded in the trenches. The hospital is a frontier: between the battlefield and home front but also between the old rules, hierarchies, and a new way of thinking. Each of the six episodes features stories about the patients, who include British soldiers and troops from all over the world.

Crimson Field airs Sundays at 9:00 p.m. beginning the 21st and repeats Fridays at 11:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Sundays at 8:00 p.m. beginning the 21st.

Tales from the Royal Wardrobe

In Performance at the White House

Tales from the Royal Wardrobe ex-

amines the significance of the royal ward-

robes of English monarchs over the last 400

years. Most kings and queens have carefully

choreographed every aspect of their apparel.

For those who haven't, the consequences

have sometimes been calamitous.

Earlier on in history, it was important to

impress your subjects with your wealth.

That's why Elizabeth I wore dresses

weighed down with jewels, and why James

II got married in a suit covered in gold lace!

In more recent times, the super-stylish

George IV got into trouble for spending

more time with his tailor than his cabinet

ministers. Edward VIII, who abdicated in 1936, was thought to be too interested in

Replica Elizabeth I Armada dress

clothes. To him we owe modern trends such as sportswear worn on non-sporting occasions,

and informal fashions such as Fairisle sweaters. While Princess Margaret, the Queen's younger

sister, could wow the fashion world in Christian Dior's sumptuous `New Look' of the 1940s,

the Queen herself had to wear more subtle designs.

Tales from the Royal Wardrobe visits a number of museums in search of royal fash-

ion, including Elizabeth I's extraordinary set of stays (a garment like a corset) from 1603,

King James II's wedding suit, beautiful 1950s evening dresses for the Queen and for Prin-

cess Margaret, and Oliver Cromwell's hat (or is it really his hat?). And so much more.

Tales from the Royal Wardrobe airs Sunday, the 21st at 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. On HD3-

1, it airs Sunday, the 21st at 11:00 p.m. and Monday, the 22nd at 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.

The Gospel Tradition

In Performance at the White House

"The Gospel Tradition" showcases an evening

of celebration with

President and Mrs.

Obama at the

White House in

honor of gospel

music and its pro-

found influence on

American music. The evening in-

cludes performances by Lyle Lovett,

Emmylou Harris

Aretha Franklin, Darlene Love, Bishop

Rance Allen, Pastor Shirley Caesar, Rodney

Crowell, Rhiannon Giddens, Emmylou Har-

ris, Tamela Mann, and Michelle Williams--

with T Bone Burnett as music director and

Robin Roberts as host.

"The Gospel Tradition on In Perfor-

mance at the White House will be broad-

cast Friday, the 26th at 9:00 p.m. and Sun-

day, the 28th at 10:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it

will be broadcast Saturday, the 27th at 7:00

p.m. on KENW-TV.

FIRST PEOPLES

200,000 years ago our ancestors took their first steps on the African savanna. Today, seven billion of us live across the planet. How did we spread from continent to continent? First Peoples is a global detective story that traces the arrival of the first Homo sapiens on five continents. The series reveals how the mixing of prehistoric human genes led the way for our species to survive and thrive around the globe. Grounded in the latest genetics, archaeology, and anthropology research, the story told is vastly different from the story of our origins that we knew just five or ten years ago.

Each episode of the five-part series focuses on a different continent--the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe--and meets the earliest Homo sapiens on that continent.

Episode 1 ? The Americas: As early humans spread out across the world, their toughest challenge was colonizing the Americas because a huge ice sheet blocked the route. It has long been thought that the first Americans were Clovis people, who arrived 13,000 years ago. But an underwater discovery in Mexico suggests people arrived earlier--coming by boat, not on foot. How closely related were these early Americans to today's Native Americans? The answer involves one of the most controversial fossils in the world, Kennewick Man.

Episode 2 ? Africa: 200,000 years ago, a new species, Homo sapiens, appeared on the African landscape. While scientists have long imagined eastern Africa as a real-life Garden of Eden, the latest research suggests humans evolved in many places across the continent at the same time.

Episode 3 ? Asia: When early humans ventured out of Africa and into Asia, the latest evidence suggests they interbred with the Denisovans, a newly discovered type of an- Homo sapiens in prehistoric Europe prevailed over cient human whose ex- our genetically similar cousins, the Neanderthals. istence was established only four years ago when geneticists extracted DNA from a tiny fragment of finger bone. Because our ancestors mated with them, their genes found a home within our DNA.

Episode 4 ? Australia: When humans arrived in Australia, they were, for the first time, truly alone, surrounded by wildly different flora and fauna. There is a close cultural and genetic link between early Australians and modern-day Aborigines; here the ancient and modern story intersect as nowhere else.

Episode 5 ? Europe: When Homo sapiens turned up in prehistoric Europe, they ran into the Neanderthals. The two types of human were similar enough to interbreed. As more and more Homo sapiens moved into Europe, the balance of power shifted. Neanderthals were overwhelmed. Ever since, we've had Europe and the rest of the world to ourselves.

First Peoples airs Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. beginning the 24th, two hours air back-to-back on the 24th and July 1st, and the final hour airs on July 8th. On HD3-1, the first two hours air back-to-back Wednesday, the 24th beginning at 7:00 p.m. and repeat Thursday, the 25th beginning at 7:00 a.m. and again at 1:00 p.m.
