ENG 2D Exam Review:

Essay Questions: 20 marks

Answer ONE of the following questions. Write an essay in paragraph format (5 paragraph essay). Remember to prove each point you make- your completed answer should be more than one (1), but NOT more than three (3) sides of foolscap.

1) When does the climax of Twelfth Night occur? Defend your choice by defining its relationship to the other elements of the plot, and especially how it resolves the central conflict. Your explanation should also resolve the question: What does it say about love; good or bad?

2) What do we learn about the theme of society and class in Twelfth Night and To Kill a Mockingbird?

3) Compare the main female roles between the two novels we studied this semester. Choose between that of Olivia, Viola, or Maria from Twelfth Night and Scout or Calpurnia from To Kill a Mockingbird.

4) Prove that appearance vs. reality is one central thematic element in the stories we have studied this semester.

You should review:

- Reading-You will need to know definitions found in stories/articles/movies (i.e. climax, tone and mood, theme, different points of view, setting, character, protagonist and antagonist, types of characters, types of conflict, symbolism, dramatic irony, foreshadowing)

- Poetry- You will be asked to identify why the poem is a narrative poem, you will identify poetic/literary devices used, tone and mood. Your poetic devices handout will be very helpful as some terms are on the definitions section!

- Novels

o To Kill a Mockingbird- plot, characters, symbolism, 3 quotes.

o Twelfth Night- dramatic irony, soliloquy, plot, characters, 2 quotes

- Ongoing:

o Grammar. All grammar rules and examples we have looked at in class.

o Essays: Review how to write an essay (hook, thesis and premise, supporting arguments, conclusion, etc.)

Know these Quotes -be able to identify the speaker, the context and the significance (2 reasons, what does it reveal)
