Sweetheart Dance By: Ashley Willmore

The Sweetheart Dance was very fun last year. At the end of the dance, we all got bags with candy and necklaces and stuff that. It said "Central Junior High Valentine's Day Dance" so that we could remember this dance. The Valentine's dance is my favorite out of all the dances . I hope you come and have fun!

The Sweetheart Dance is the most formal dance here at CJHS. The girls wear dresses. If you are a girl and

you come with a date, your date will wear a matching tie. This year the dance will be held on February 16th. The dance starts at 7PM. If you are wanting pictures or to eat come at 6:30PM. You must buy tickets to get in and eat. The ticket prices are $12 a piece. Bella's will be catering. We will be having pizza and pasta.

The stan-

dards to get in are that you can't have any failing grades and you can't owe more than fifteen dollars on your lunch

bill. The Parent Group is in charge of all decorations.

Everyone had a really good time last year. Even if you don't have a date go by yourself. A lot of kids did last year and had a really fun time. See you on the dance floor!

A Tribute to "The Man" By: Logan Elko

Last month, Stan Musial passed away at the age of 92. He passed away of natural causes at his home in Ladue, Missouri. People across the nation were shocked, even throughout the world! He had many awards given to him throughout his life, but what most people will remember him for is his kindness. On the same day however, legendary baseball player, and former Baltimore Orioles manager, Earl Weaver passed away too.

Today I'm going to inform you about Stan's career and his regular life. He was a

three ? time National League M.V.P., who always strived to keep his batting average above .300. Stan got his nickname by Baltimore fans who didn't know his name, and so they just said, "Here comes that man again!" After that, the name evolved into what we know now today as "Stan the Man." He spent his whole 22 year career with the St. Louis Cardinals. Stan was elected into the Hall of Fame in 1969. Total he played in 3,026 games. He is considered the greatest baseball player who ever lived.

Stan was awarded

many medals, but the best in my opinion, is the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest award that can be given to a civilian! He was awarded with this medal in 2011 by President Barrack Obama, in the White House. His health was deteriorating throughout the years, but he always tried to make it to any Cardinal events.

I hope you now know a little more about Stan Musial, and the awards given to him. He was a great man, very gentleman like and a natural at baseball.

Couple Of The Month By: Raelynn Tanner

Its Valentine's Day and couples all around CJHS are showing their love. But the cutest couple by far is Stephanie Tucker and Jason Johnson!! They have dated for 5 months and 6 days. They met in school. Their song is Wanted by Hunter Hayes. Stephanie's favorite love song is Love Story or Trouble by Taylor Swift. Jason's is Don't You Wanna Stay by Jason Aldean and Kelly Klarkson. Stephanie's favorite romantic movie is The Notebook, starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. Jason is Friends with Benefits starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis.

Stephanie and Jason have nicknames for each other. Their nicknames for each other are boo and cutie pie. Jason says Stephanie doesn't have a favorite color and Stephanie said that his is green. They both love Valentine's Day and can't wait to spend it together. They both agreed that chocolates, roses, and a big teddy bear are the best gifts for Valentine's Day. The last question I asked was "What do you think love is?" They both said, "It's when two people care for each other and want to be together and act themselves around each other." Honestly, I think we all can agree that that is what love is. Love is when you can act yourself around a person you care about. Congratulations Stephanie and Jason! You are the cutest couple this Valentine's Day!

The History of Valentine's Day By: Emma Talluto

Valentine's Day isn't all about roses, candy, and sweet presents to your valentine. It happens to also have a historical background. A man named Valentine fell in love with his jailors daughter while he was in jail. Before Valentine was put to death he sent a letter to the lady he loved and signed it "From Your Valentine." This was all the way back in 270 AD. The history of giving you valentine flowers comes from the old-fashion custom of sending floral bouquets to pass on non-verbal messages. Valentine's Day is one of the biggest holidays to send flowers! Chocolate is another big valentine gift. The first chocolate candies were invented in the 1860s by Cadbury. There is 1.1 boxed chocolate sold on Valentine's Day.

Valentine's Day still carries out throughout this day. It is held on February 14th every year. People still do a lot of the customs older people used to do around 270 AD. Most schools have Valentine's Day parties for little kids and dances for older ones to celebrate this holiday. Just remember that Valentine was the reason that we celebrate for Valentine's Day!

6 Interesting Facts about Valentine's Day: About 30% of pet owners will give Valentine's Day gifts to their pets. 15% of women send themselves flowers on Valentine's Day. 73% of people who buy flowers for Valentines are men, while 27% are women. Approximately 1 billion Valentine cards are sent each year worldwide. The rose is the traditional Valentine flower. It signifies romantic love. 496 AD Pop Gelasius declared Valentine Day February 14 to honor Valentine!

The History of Cupid By Katelynn Arrington

What is Cupid? Is he a boy or a man? Does he wear a diaper or a cloth? Where did Cupid come from? Is Cupid real? What is the history on Cupid? These are just some of the question I will be answering for you today.

Most people see as Cupid as a fairy. Cupid is not a fairy. Cupid is the god of love. Venus is Cu-

pid's mother. He is a baby with rosy red cheeks and an arrow of love. To some people Cupid as a stuck up little boy who thinks he can do whatever he chooses to do.

You might ask what Cupid's arrow does. Well, whoever he shoots in the bottom will fall in love with the next person they see. Cupid's bow

and arrow is a sign of love and romance.

Now we all know at least one or two facts about Cupid. Now that romance is in the air, you now have some ideas on who Cupid is. Just talking about Cupid is romantic. Hopefully your crush will get shot with Cupid's arrow!!

Are You Ready?? By Acelyn Reed

ISAT is coming up so we need to get ready and prepare for it. ISAT standards for Illinois Standards Achievement Test. The reason we have ISAT is to see how well we understand Illinois Learning Standards. Another reason why we take ISAT is to see what classes we get next year.

For me ISAT isn't the best thing in the world but, we have to do it anyway. Another reason why ISAT isn't the best thing in the world for me is that it is always around my birthday and that sucks a lot.

Here are some tips for the week of the ISAT: 1. You need to get a goodnight sleep the night before. 2. Make sure you eat something healthy for breakfast and you eat

enough so you're not hungry. 3. Don't show up to school late the mornings you take the test. 4. Pay attention to the directions. 5. Read all the questions carefully. 6. Double check your answers and eliminate the answers you know

are wrong. 7. Ask questions before the teacher tells you to start if you aren't for sure on something.

Memories: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

By Morgan McDaniel

Facebook is a very social networking website. It is a place where you can socialize, post pictures, and connect with old friends. Facebook was launched in February 2004, and is operated and privately owned by Facebook Inc. Billions of people are on facebook for hours a day, but is Facebook too much for people?

Facebook is a place where you can play games, type posts, and talk to friends and family who you don't have

much contact with. You can have fun and get a good laugh. There is also a game called Pizap, where you can edit photos and post them were everyone can see. There are also games where you can fight people, raise pets, and ride a crazy skateboard. Facebook is a place to make memories, good and bad.

You see, people are bullying on Faceboook too. People can insult you in front of billions. Many people are hurt, or are bullies. People

can post bad pictures, and say hurtful things. Facebook is a good website, but it also makes it easier for bullies.

If we all work together we can make Facebook only good memories. So, next time when you're on Facebook, fight back with kindness and think about what you post. Of course have a ton of fun and laughter on Facebook!

Science Projects By Angela Mateycak

Mrs. Kerley `s Science classes are doing science projects this semester. I asked what her how many years she had been doing this assignment. Mrs. Kerley said this is her fourth year she has assigned this project. Mrs. Kerley said students do research about a famous scientist and present the information to the class. She always has high expectations for her students, so she would love for every group to turn in awesome reports!

Mrs. Kerley said her favorite scientist was Marie Curie because she paved the way for women to be acknowledged in the field of science. She said that there is extra credit. Students can bring pictures, or objects that relate to their scientist and even dress up. Mrs. Kerley said this project benefits all 7th graders by hopefully learning more about science, but mostly responsibility and how to work better with a group. Students do not get to pick their scientist. Mrs. Kerley said this was because everyone would wanted to research Albert Einstein. She wants to make sure everyone researches someone different. Students will have to present their reports aloud. This project is worth a lot of points. The whole project is worth at least 200 pts, including extra credit. The project is do on February 22nd . Students have plenty of time to do their projects.

Flu Prevention By Kobie Tanner

CENTRAL PRESS

We are in the midst of flu season! Students are dropping like flies! Under these circumstances you need to know how to prevent, know the symptoms, and take care of the flu.

Recently, there have been many cases of the stomach and respiratory flu. This is because of the cold weather and wind, but there's a way to prevent it. Here are some tips from :

Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

Practice good health

habits. Get plenty of sleep and exercise, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat healthy food.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. If you are sick with flulike illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine.

If you avoid these it lowers your chance of catching the flu. Another great way to stay away from the flu is to get a flu vaccination. By doing this when the flu enters through your eyes or mouth, your body can reject it and kill the virus.

Here are some symptoms of the flue from :

A 100oF or higher fever or feeling feverish (not everyone with the flu has a fever)

A cough and/or sore throat

A runny or stuffy nose

Headaches and/or body aches

Chills

Fatigue Nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea (most common in children).

I hope this helps prevent the flu and other viruses from your life. Thank you for heading my advice.

Nikolas Wallenda By Jakob Upton

Do you guys know who Nikolas Wallenda is? He is the man that tight-roped across Niagara Falls. Nikolas is 34 years old. He was born January 24th, 1979. Nikolas Wallenda holds six Guinness Book World Records.

Nikolas part the seventh generation of the Flying Wallenda's. When Nikolas was only thirteen, he made his first professional tightrope performance in a circus act with his parents. Nikolas decided he was going to tight-rope for a living in 1998. In 2001, he was part of the first eight-person high-wire pyramid. In 2002 to 2005, he performed with his family at many different places, forming his own troupe in 2005. During 2007 to 2008, Nik worked with his childhood friend Bella Nock and helped invent a double version of The Wheel of Steel. The Wheel of Steel is a huge device that acrobats do stunts on. In 2009, Nik set many new personal bests for longest and highest tight-rope walks. Nik preformed a total of 15 walks above 100 feet in the air during that year.

In 2008, Nikolas set a new Guinness World Record for the longest and highest bike ride on a tight-rope. This stunt was in New Jersey and it was 250 feet long and 135 feet above the ground. In 2010, Nik and his mother tight-roped across the two Condado Hotels in Puerto Rico. This is the same stunt that had killed Karl Wallenda which is Nikolas Wallenda's great grandfather. On June 10, 2011 Nikolas hung from a helicopter 250 feet in the air only using his teeth to hold on to a rope tied to the helicopter. Wallenda is planning on tight-roping the Grand Canyon soon. I think Wallenda is an amazing dare devil and I hope that his children grow up to be tight-ropers.
