Many visitors to Australia think we have kangaroos jumping down our city streets or koalas hanging from every tree.

As you have probably worked out, this is not the case.

It is important when you visit a new country to learn as much as you can about the country during your stay. By the end of this webquest you will know a lot more about your host country as well as have increased your vocabulary. Let’s get started.

First we will begin with a brief history of the country which will give you some background information.

But before you read you may need to familiarise yourself with some new vocabulary.

The  history of Australia refers to the history of the area and people of the Commonwealth of Australia and its I________ societies. A___________ Australians are believed to have first arrived on the Australian mainland by boat from the Indonesian a_________between 40,000 to 60,000 years ago.

The first uncontested landing in Australia by Europeans was by Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon in 1606. Other European explorers followed i____________until, in 1770, James Cook sailed the East Coast of Australia for Britain and returned with stories favouring c___________at Botany Bay (now in Sydney). A First Fleet of British ships arrived at Botany Bay in January 1788 to establish a penal (prison) colony. Other c_________ were established by Britain around the c_________ and European explorers went deep into the interior throughout the 19th century. These explorers introduced disease and conflict which greatly weakened Indigenous Australians throughout that period and many died. Also the Europeans assumed that they were the owners of the land, not recognising that the Indigenous population were the original inhabitants and themselves the owners of the land. The treatment of Aborigines during this time was a very ‘bleak’ period of Australian history and is often referred to as ‘the i____________ by the Indigenous population.

When you have made up your mind check with your teacher that no-one else has chosen your destination and then you’re ready to start your research.
