Course Description: Sixth grade focuses on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.

Textbooks: The textbook used in the sixth grade is McGraw – Hill, Georgia Math Course 1. The student will create an Interactive notebook. The individual student’s Interactive Notebook (INB) is an instrumental resource. If a student loses a textbook, they will be required to purchase another textbook.

SUPPLIES: Students are expected to have these supplies available to them EVERYDAY in class: Composition Notebook, at least two working pencils, color pencils, a glue stick, graph paper and highlighter. It is recommended that you purchase two or three composition notebooks and 3-4 glue sticks since you will need to replenish these supplies throughout the year.

ACADEMIC GRADING SCALE:

A= 90-100 Excellent achievement at assigned performance level.

B = 80-89 Above average achievement at assigned performance level.

C = 70-79 Average achievement at assigned performance level.

F = 0-69 Failure to achieve at assigned performance level.

GRADING SYSTEM: Tests and Projects = 40%, Quizzes = 25%, Homework = 10%, and Classwork = 25%.

Math tests and quizzes will be scheduled on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Progress Reports/DEFICIENCY NOTICES: All students will receive a formal progress report every four and a half weeks. Please make sure to sign and return the progress report. Students in jeopardy of failing will be issued a deficiency notice.

MAKE-UP WORK

It is the student's responsibility to ask the teacher for make-up work immediately upon returning to school. If a test was scheduled before the student was absent, then the student may be required to take the test the day he/she returns unless other arrangements have been made. If a student has missed work and his/her absence is not due to truancy, the teacher will give the student the opportunity to make up the work. Generally, one day for each day of excused absence will be provided for the make-up work. Failure to meet the deadline will result in a "50".

Homework: Homework will be assigned every night Monday through Thursday and occasionally on Friday. The homework should only take about 20 minutes. Homework is an important part of the learning process for math, and it is crucial that it is completed and turned in ON TIME (not rushed through on your ride to school or during Homeroom). You and your child may call the APS Homework Hotline at 678-553-3029 or visit for homework help.

Conferences and Communication: If you would like to schedule a conference with me please contact me. Our parent conference days are Mondays. If you have any questions or concerns about your child, please feel free to email. I will return emails within two school days of receipt.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: I expect all work turned in to be honest, and from that student. If any child is caught cheating or helping another student cheat on ANY WORK, he/she will earn a 0% on that assignment, and cannot be made up. Cheating does not put our best foot forward and will not be tolerated!

VERIFICATION OF PARENT RECEIPT: Please complete the verification of parent receipt by Monday, August 10th, 2015.
