You may think that this course or math in general is hard. I assure you that even the most accomplished mathematicians have struggled at some point in their careers. We are here to help you. With some efforts and dedication, you will surely succeed in this course and complete math remediation sooner that you had anticipated. MATH 0920 Prerequisites: None. Executive Order 665 (EO 665). EO 665 mandates that incoming CSULA students must (i) complete their remedial math courses (Math 0920 and Math 0930) within one calendar year of admission to CSULA in order to keep their enrollment status and (ii) continuously take either Math 0920 or Math 0930 every semester until Math remediation is complete. Topical outline: Symbols and sets of numbers, fractions, variable expressions and equations, operations on and properties of real numbers, simplifying algebraic expressions, addition and multiplication properties of equality, solving linear equations, problem solving, formulas, linear inequalities, area, perimeter, circles, volume, surface area, rectangular coordinate system, linear equations, slope, functions, systems of equations. ?Student learning outcomes: Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:Perform numerical computations involving fractions, signed numbers, Least Common Multiple (LCM), Greatest Common Divisor (GCD), and absolute valueAdd and subtract polynomialsSolve linear equationsCompute geometric measurementsFind the equation of a line and graph linear functionsSolve a system of equationsUse elementary function notationRequirementsKnewton Access Code: A significant portion of your course grade is based on the assignments you complete on an adaptive learning platform known as Knewton. You must purchase an access code. It is crucial that you complete all the assignment on time. Completing an assignment entails that you have understood most of the learning outcomes of a particular section associated with the assignment. Participation: Everyday we will be actively working on problems. You maybe asked to work in groups and present your solution. Active participation is expected. Your participation will comprise about 5% of your grade. Quizzes/tests: We will have several quizzes and two tests throughout the semester. Final Exam: There is a cumulative, common final exam.Grading system Knewton Homework20%Two tests20% (10% each)Cumulative Final Exam35%Quizzes20%Participation5%Note: < Math 920 is graded A/B/C/NC.You can further explain your grading system here. > Emergency Preparedness: The meeting point for Salazar Hall is in the parking lot at the bottom of the ramp. In an emergency, leave the building using staircases (and in an earthquake, wait to do so until the shaking has stopped). Move quickly to the meeting point and follow the instruction of the building coordinators. Make sure to check in with me so I know that you are accounted for. If one of your classmates needs help in evacuating, please assist. If you know that you will need assistance in an emergency and it is not obvious that this is the case, please see me so I can be aware of your need for assistance.ADA statement: Reasonable accommodation will be provided to any student who is registered with the Office of Students with Disabilities and requests needed accommodation.Academic honesty statement: I will abide by the University Policy on academic dishonesty. This policy can be found, for example, in the Schedule of Classes. <insert any additional statement you would like to put here, such as “Students are expected to do their own work. Copying the work of others, cheating on exams, and similar violations will be reported to the University Discipline Officer, who has the authority to take disciplinary actions against students who violate the standards of academic honesty.”>Student responsibilities: Students are responsible for being aware of all announcements that are made in class, such as changes in exam dates, and cancellation of class due to instructor’s absence. Students are responsible for announcements made on days that they are absent.Students must check their CSULA email account regularly for information from the instructor and the Department. Failure to do so may result in missed deadlines or other consequences that might adversely affect students. Note that you can forward this email account to any other account of your choosing.Your next math class: If your are a CSULA student, the next Math course after successful completion of Math 0920 is Math 0930. Remember that by EO 665 you are required to take Math 0920 or Math 0930 every semester until you complete Math remediation.Important Dates: PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD IMPORTANT DATES, FOR EXAMPLE MINI-EXAM DATES.
