ADENOVIRUSES ARE COMMON VIRUSES THAT CAN CAUSE MANY DIFFERENT ILLNESSES AND SYMPTOMS. This includes:
? Cough, stuffy nose, or trouble breathing ? Sore throat ? Fever ? Bronchitis ? Pneumonia (infection of the lungs) ? Conjunctivitis (pink eye) ? Bladder inflammation or infection ? Diarrhea ? Inflammation of stomach and intestines ? Neurologic disease (conditions that affect the brain and spinal cord)
There are several types of adenoviruses. Types 3, 4, and 7 can cause severe illness. Type 14 has caused outbreaks in colleges and nursing homes. Adenovirus illnesses are usually mild but can be severe.
THERE ARE NO SPECIFIC MEDICATIONS FOR PEOPLE WITH ADENOVIRUS INFECTION. Most people have mild symptoms, which can be managed with rest and over-the-counter medications.
Contact your healthcare provider if symptoms are severe, do not get better after 10 days, or if you are worried.
ADENOVIRUSES SPREAD THROUGH CLOSE CONTACT WITH SICK PEOPLE OR THINGS THEY TOUCHED. The virus can stay on surfaces for as long as two months. Adenoviruses can also spread by contact with an infected person's stool, like during diaper changes.
People, especially those with weak immune systems, can spread the virus even after they feel better. Some people can spread the virus without showing any symptoms.
TO AVOID GETTING SICK OR SPREADING DISEASE: ? Wash hands with soap or use sanitizer. (Frequent handwashing is especially important in childcare and healthcare settings.) ? Stay away from sick people. ? Clean frequently touched surfaces. ? Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. ? Stay home if you're sick.
