Part I: Vocabulary Points: _______ out of 40 points
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text.
For each of the following words, fill out the accompanying table. Use your copy of Swallowing Stones to find the sentence where the word is used. Underline the context clues, or clues in the sentence that help you understand its meaning. Then, explain what you think the word means and why. Finally, demonstrate your understanding of the word by writing your own sentence using the word correctly.
EXAMPLE:
Word: MORTIFIED pg. 86
Synonym:
Write the sentence(s) from Swallowing Stones, underlining context clues:
"Jenna's hand went instinctively to her hair, which clung to her sweating face and neck in clumps. She shoved her damp hair behind her ears, mortified" (86).
Based on the clues you underlined, what do you think the word means? Why?
Based on my clues, I think mortified means extremely embarrassed. The words "sweating face and neck" let me know that she probably doesn't look very put together. Also, if her hair is "damp," that would mean that she was very sweaty. Running into her boyfriend this way would have to be embarrassing.
Use the word in your own sentence. After falling during a basic spin, the ballerina was mortified and ran crying off the stage.
