Review the structure of a Cinquain poem:
(Give students copy of cinquain handout)
Line 1: Subject (one word)
Line 2: Two describing words (adjectives)
Line 3: Three –ing words about what the subject does (verbs)
Line 4: A sentence about the subject
Line 5: Another name (synonym) for the subject
Examples:
Catcher
Fast, strong
Running, throwing, jumping
A protective mask on his face
All Star!
Runners
Sleek, muscular
Climbing, sprinting, weaving
They try to make a good time
Olympian
Lesson:
Have students open Microsoft Word. Type first and last name at top of page, press enter twice.
Open Draw toolbar by clicking on Drawing icon [pic]on toolbar at top of screen.
Click on Word Art button [pic] on Drawing toolbar (bottom of screen)
Use Word Art for title of cinquain (first line of poem) Give students no more than 5 minutes for Word Art selection.
After title is complete, press the Center Alignment button on Formatting toolbar [pic]
Students will compose and type Lines 2, 3 and 4 of poem, using the Cinquain Pattern Handout as a guide.
Use Word Art for line 5.
When they are finished, make sure they have spellchecked. They can highlight the text to change the text’s font and size before they print.
Students who finish early may also add a border (Format->Borders and Shading->Page Border tab) or insert a piece of Clip Art that shows their animal. (Insert->Picture->From Clip Art)
Students should save the poems in their My Documents folder and print their work.
