OUR LENT AND THE VIRTUES OF CHARITY AND JUSTICE
H
"Be compassionate as your Father in heaven is
compassionate." The word compassion derives from Latin
E
and essentially means "to feel with another". Compassion
is a good synonym for the complex word "love". When I
studied the principles of psychotherapy, we were taught that
establishing rapport (compassionate care) with the client seeking
P
healing, was a top priority. Establishing rapport occurs when the sincere interest of the therapist is felt by the client. It could be argued that 80 to
A
90% of the positive results that may occur from the bond of therapist and client come about through empathetic concern - rapport. This is
true for our marriages and friendships as well ? compassionate caring.
S
"Love your neighbor as yourself." Catholic Charities, our national
T
outreach to the needy, grows out of a sense of compassion for those less
fortunate. Donating to Catholic Charities (and the Catholic Ministries
O
Appeal is the major support of our diocesan Catholic Charities) is
almsgiving and direct aid to the poor and needy. Charity means direct
R'
assistance to those who are deprived of the basic necessities of life: food, clothing, and shelter.
S
Charity is our response to people who are impacted by personal and
social ills. Hand-in-hand with the virtue of charity, is the virtue of justice.
While charity is direct service, justice digs out the causes of such ills and
remedies them.
P
The Missionaries of Christ, a religious order founded by Mother (St.)
A
Teresa of Calcutta, is a direct service hands-on religious community.
They live in the poorest of neighborhoods on the same level of poverty
G
that those around them have, and offer compassionate care for the forgotten, the dying and abandoned people in the blighted areas of the
E
world's cities. This is called charity work because it brings those who are charitable into contact with the faces of the poor, and it addresses the
immediate needs of people who suffer.

The missionaries of Christ do not do justice. They do the work of charity. The virtue of justice, the other important response to the challenge of the gospel, tries to discover the root causes of suffering and eliminate them. Those who do justice ask the questions: "What is causing these people to be dying in the streets, alone and forgotten?" "What can society do to bring justice to these human beings? "What structures can we create to bring an end to human want?" If we can create these structures, we can lessen the need for charity. Pope Paul VI said: "If you want peace, work for justice."
Charity and justice are twin components in our response to the challenge of the gospel. We need to do both. Get involved at Parish Outreach. Donate to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, Catholic Relief Services, The Catholic Campaign for Human Development, The Propagation of the Faith, etc.

Lenten Rules and Regulations
Abstinence from Meat: All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent including Good Friday. There is no upper age limit for the requirement of abstinence.
Fasting All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are bound to observe the law of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means limiting oneself to a single full meal and two smaller meals and avoiding food between meals. We are encouraged also to voluntarily fast other days during Lent. Sundays and Feast Days are not days of fast and abstinence. (Feast days include St. Joseph, March 20th.) Dispensations from Abstinence and Fasting: We are not to consider ourselves lightly excused from the laws of Fast and Abstinence. However, with a good reason, one may excuse oneself but substitute another penitential practice to compensate.
Easter Duty All Catholics who have received First Communion are required to receive Communion at least once during the Easter Season which includes the time between Ash Wednesday and Trinity Sunday. According to the church's command, "after having attained the age of discretion, each of the faithful is bound by an obligation faithfully to confess serious sins at least once a year." It is encouraged for all Catholics as a pious practice without being strictly necessary, confession of every day faults (venial sin) is nevertheless strongly recommended by the church. Indeed a regular confession of our venial sins helps us form our conscience, fight against evil tendencies, let ourselves be healed by Christ and progress in the life of the spirit. By receiving more frequently through the sacrament the gift of the Father's mercy, we are spurred to be merciful as he is merciful." (Catechism of the Catholic Church)
Stations of the Cross Fridays during Lent
at 7:00 p.m.
It's a New Liturgical Year, so we begin the Gospel of St. Mark. Our book discussion/faith sharing group has decided to spend time with St. Mark's Gospel. Beginning in January, we plan to meet six or seven times during the months of January through March to spend time prayerfully reflecting upon St Mark's Gospel. We will be using a book to guide us through the Scriptures.
Each session will be in the Parish Center at 7pm
Wednesday March 21 Wednesday April 11 and Wednesday, April 25 You do not need to attend each session. Each session stands on its own. Bring your bibles. We will provide the discussion guide book. We look forward to journeying with you through the Gospel. For further information leave a message for Deacon Bill Weiss at the rectory (516) 249-0127 or email him at wweiss165@
