When you have done a piece of writing, use this list to check your work.

Capital letters

Have you used capital letters for:

• beginning sentences

• names

• places

• days, months

Punctuation

Have you:

• used a full stop at the end of sentences?

• used question marks at the end of questions?

• used speech marks before and after words actually spoken?

• begun speech with a capital letter?

Vocabulary

Have you:

• used some interesting adjectives?

• used any similes?

• used different words to begin sentences?

• used some synonyms for ‘said’ (e.g. shouted, whispered, mumbled, muttered) ?

• used connectives like because, but, so, however in the middle of sentences?
