ALGEBRA FOR CALCULUS Topics List for Exam 3

Topics for Chapter 3 Exam (Exam #2)

Section 3.1 and 3.2

• Be able to classify the types of polynomial functions. (pg. 265 #1-10)

• If I give you a function, be able to tell whether or not it’s a polynomial and why/why not.

• Be able to give examples and non-examples of polynomial functions.

• Given a polynomial function, be able to indicate its end behavior, zeros and their multiplicities, construct a sign chart (x-axis intervals), and a give a rough sketch using this information (WITHOUT just the use of your calculator). (pg. 279 #13-32)

Section 3.3

• Use long division to divide two polynomials. (pg. 287 #5-10)

• Use synthetic division to divide two polynomials. (pg. 287 #11-22)

• Use synthetic division to find function values. (pg. 287 #23-30)

• Use synthetic division to determine whether or not a number is a zero of a polynomial. (pg. 288 #31-37)

Section 3.4

• List all the possible rational zeros of a polynomial. (pg. 298 #49-54)

• Find all the zeros of a polynomial, including imaginaries. (pg. 299 #55-70)

***You need to show all these steps in order to obtain full credit. This problem will be

broken down into the following parts:

1. Use the Rational Zero Test to list all the possible rational zeros.

2. Use synthetic division to test your choices. I will narrow down the choices for you.

3. List all linear factors and all zeros.

• Write a polynomial given its zeros. (pg. 298 #1-15, #17-42)

Section 3.6

• Be able to solve a polynomial inequality using a sign chart. You need to show your sign chart to receive points for the problem. (pg. 327 #30-44)
