“Small Steps” IBWSC 2016GAT Project SummaryProject name: Small StepsGAT Name/Leader:Bluche, JelenaBackground: highlight the needs identified and being addressed by the project (link to themes and content of conference.Mission & Objectives: what you want to achieve (aims) ?6.6 million people. People without a home, forced out of their lives by civil war, by conflict that resulted from the pursuit of peace and the opportunity to live in a democratic society. Do they deserve this? Do these women and children, that make up 75% of Syrian refugees, deserve to spend their lives in desperately bad situations, where disease caused by poor sanitation and inadequate food are commonplace? Syrian refugees have been exposed to untold atrocities within their home country and seek refuge in places they believe will protect them. Some make it to Europe, expecting escape from war and a better quality of life. However the reality in many European camps couldn’t be further from the truth. For example Idomeni refugee camp in Greece. A camp that is infamous for its horrendous living environment. The Greek minister of interior visited the camp and deemed it comparable to Nazi concentration camps. A mother and her child, a concept with connotations of love and companionship. Tainted, by the horror of reality in a refugee camp. As global citizens we cannot choose wilful ignorance as our respite from the problems afflicting our world ?, it is our responsibility to inform our local communities about the experiences of refugees in camps around Europe. We aim to both raise awareness and funds to help deliver more supplies to these people in need. Our ultimate goal is to provide relief to refugees of the Syrian Crisis. In order to accomplish this we will focus on promoting three different concepts: awareness, empathy and charity. We will increase awareness by educating our community in the realities that refugees face on aBy educating our communities we aim to increase awareness of the situation and to inspire people to make a difference. We will reach out to local schools and organizations, contact local officials and involve local businesses to spreadto build empathy for refugees by simulating parts of their daily lives, and to raise money that will be used to provide relief to as many refugees as possible.Primary Goals:Educate/Increase Awareness by Reaching out to other schools and organizationsContacting local officialsInvolving local businessesRaise MoneyAsk for support from local businesses and charitiesApproach your school administrators/IB about fundingCollect fees for participation?Set up a method of collecting donationsBuild Empathy with Syrian RefugeesCreate a realistic simulation environmentRelate your events to the experiences of a refugeeMake sure to explain the intentions behind each activityDe-brief afterwards to ensure understanding of the projectEducate and raise awareness about refugees and their situations throughout the world.Raise money for refugees by reaching out to our communities.Build empathy for refugees by having them experience a simulation the devastating lives that they face every dayActivities (objectives): how the project will achieve your goalsCollaborators: What groups are important in the development and implementation of the project? (within the organization)This conference gives us a once in a lifetime opportunity to reach to an international community of people from all over the world who all wish to unite over a common goal to make a difference in the world. This is something that all of us may never encounter again and definitely something that we all ought to take advantage of. The beauty in our project is that all of our team and our surrounding communities will participate in fundraising events on the same day around the world and unite over a common cause: the refugee crisis. We hope that any individuals that decide to take the initiative of organising “small steps” in their local community will be able to enact change in both smaller and larger projects. We understand that the world is a diverse, multicultural place, and that fundraisers will operate differently depending on the location. This is why we do not want to limit our project to a single activity, but rather give people the freedom to tailor projects to their own particular environments in order to ensure a greater rate of success. An important aspect of these activities is that they raise both awareness AND funds, which is the ultimate goal of our project as a whole. ?We have thought of a few exemplar projects which would be well-suited to our aim such as but not limited to:An example of one of the activities that can be carried out on that day would be a 3 hour simulation done in a controlled environment. This will allow participants to live a day in the life of a refugee. Participants would be given a card detailing their persona’s name, social status, gender and other characteristics. Then they would have to encounter various daily obstacles that refugees face within that timeframe. Some include: gender inequality, poor treatment, lack of food, lack of education, lack of healthcare and others. For example: some families would not have enough money for medicine and therefore would not be able to do certain work activities. A second example of an event would be a 24 hour relay walk around a track to simulate the long journey that refugees must go through as they march to safety. Participants could also perhaps carry heavy backpacks to further extend the experience and allow for a stronger emotional connection between themselves and refugees. In addition, relay walks have shown to have a high turnout rate in various countries around the world. Some other examples of how communities may be able to get involved in “small steps” is through opening donations from the public to refugees in need of funds, clothes, shoes and toys for children. As mentioned previously, the ultimate goal of this project is to provide relief to refugees and we feel that these activities to be done on the day can have that effect. Any one life that is helped through this programme whether through donations, participants or funds raised deems “small steps” a success. In order to make our project possible we will try to reach out to as many organisations as possible with a requiry for help. Here are some examples of which associations could be contacted and how they might contribute in taking the small steps towards our common goal.Partners: groups or organizations are crucial to the development of the project? What are their roles? (outside the organization)Timeline: What sort of timeline have you developed? The International Red Cross is able to help with the organisation of the event or transportation of the collected goods. Red Cross is centralised and available in most countries, which makes it very practical, also they already have events supporting refugees.UNHCR :Since we will send money to them, we can ask them to support our mission so that we may use their logo, as it will attract more people. Additionally, Dr Christiane Stepanek-Allen said that she was willing to hear our voices and help if necessary. The UNHCR has also already been contacted by one of our members and they agreed to get back to us on the subject matter, which is very encouraging. CARE : is an organisation that allows you to send messages of hope to refugees in camps. We can do this so that they can get some emotional support and hope along with the material support. This organisation translates and delivers the message volounterially. ?Save The Children( international ) is also willing to support fundraising for syrian childrenAs well as International Rescue Committee ?is just willing to help with refugee issues. Also associations similar to Relief and Reconciliation might be useful, for instance this organisation helps collecting the money electronically and donating them to Syrian refugees.Date: Mid to Late October (could be a week or a specific day)Budget/Resources: funds and materials neededCommunication: how would you use social media or other approaches to communicate your project.Sponsors from various local organizations. What must we do?Contact or write in a proposal of our plan to the school board of directors for permission for access the school compoundContact an/various organizations to enquire about the possibility of a sponsorshipUpon confirmation and permit for our event, we could announce our plan to the schoolGather volunteers to help out and at the same time gather participants for the eventFinalize the number of volunteers and participants going for the eventPrepare for the eventCarry it outSocial Media; Snapchat, Facebook, TwitterSnapchat - send in emails and get a live snapchat theme.Facebook:- buying advertisements, creating pages and groupsTwitter:- useful hashtags to make the topic trending and possibly ask celebrities to retweet it.Video: Every individual team in each individual school around the world ought to set up a film crew to film the events and endeavours. Then all groups will compile a video and share it on social media to gain public attention. The ultimate aim would be to get the video to go viral.Empathy videos that would be used/published before the walk to attract in more people and raise more awareness.Request youtubers to spread the word through their channels. Use of eye-catchy posters to spread more awareness in the nearby locality. Also use of slogans and logos to make it professional. Use of animation or art or graphic design for the posters.Evaluation: how you will measure success? What challenges would you have to overcome as a result of implementing this in the real world? We believe that as long as one life is saved or helped through “Small Steps”, success is achieved. We can also measure success through the funds and donations reached using our project. ................
