Word Problems Using Matrices

Create a system of equations for each word problem. Solve 3 systems using Cramer’s Rule and 3 systems using inverse matrices.

1. Suppose your community center sells a total of 292 tickets for a basketball game. An adult ticket costs $3. A student ticket costs $1. The sponsors collect $470 in ticket sales. Write and solve a system to find the number of each type of ticket sold.

2. Suppose you have $29.00 in your bank account and start saving $18.00 every week. Your friend has $161.00 in his account and is withdrawing $15.00 every week. When will your account balances be the same?

3. A farmer grows only sunflowers and flax on his 240-acre farm. This year he wants to plant 80 more acres of sunflowers than of flax. How many acres of each crop does the farmer need to plant?

4. A company sells brass and steel machine parts. One shipment contains 3 brass and 10 steel parts and costs $48. A second shipment contains 7 brass and 4 steel parts and costs $54. Find the cost of each type of machine part.

5. One number is four less than eleven times another. The sum of the two numbers is 92. Find the numbers.

6. Sally has $21.40 in dimes and quarters, for a total of 100 coins. How many of each kind of coin does Sally have?
