Set up and solve (using substitution) a systems of equations for each of the following word problems.

1) a) Find the value of two numbers if their sum is 12 and their difference is 4.

b) The difference of two numbers is 3. Their sum is 13. Find the numbers.

2) Rich counts out $61 in one-dollar and five-dollar bills. He has 17 bills in all. How many one-dollar bills does he have? How many five dollar bills does he have?

3) Flying to Kampala with a tailwind a plane averaged 158 km/h. On the return trip the plane only averaged 112 km/h while flying back into the same wind. Find the speed of the wind and the speed of the plane in still air.

4) A movie theatre sells $9 tickets to adults and $6 tickets to students. One evening, the theatre sold 636 tickets for a total of $4,974. Create and solve system of equations that can be used to find the number of adult tickets and the number of student tickets that were sold that evening. Show your work.

5) The school that Stefan goes to is selling tickets to a choral performance. On the first day of ticket sales the school sold 3 senior citizen tickets and 1 child ticket for a total of $38.
