Degree

Is Dental Hygiene right for you?

Dental Hygiene might be a good fit for you if you are detail-oriented, patient, enjoy science and working closely with others. As

you progress through your coursework, you will be afforded the opportunity to study chemistry, nutrition, anatomy, and of

course, dental hygiene. A degree in Dental Hygiene opens up a tremendous number of career paths, ranging from education

and research, to the corporate and public health sector. Graduates of dental hygiene programs typically find work in dental

offices, nursing homes, various educational institutions and public health facilities.

Dental hygienists perform a wide range of duties that contribute to providing safe, ethical and effective patient care. These duties may include, but are not limited to, x-ray imaging of the mouth, general oral care including cleaning, polishing teeth and placing dental fillings, assisting in the administering of anesthetics, educating patients about oral hygiene, and providing additional preventive care.

Dental Hygiene prerequisite courses at TCC Students wishing to earn an Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Dental Hygiene are able to complete their prerequisite courses for those degrees here at TCC, and have the option of completing additional courses to earn TCC's Associate of Arts (DTA) Degree. Students will then be able to apply to specific Dental Hygiene programs in the area, such as at Lake Washington Institute of Technology, Seattle Central College, Shoreline Community College, or Pierce College.

Course Planning High School: While in high school, students should pursue all available courses in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology. Students should meet with an advisor as soon as they are admitted to Tacoma Community College.
