1. Clay it: use play dough or clay to create something that shows/connects with meaning of the word.

2. Big Bowl: choose an *item from the bowl and when challenged with a vocabulary word, make a

connection between the item and the word’s meaning. *everyday items from around your home or classroom

3. Whiteboard Response: use a whiteboard to either write a sentence or draw a picture that connects with the meaning of the vocabulary word.

4. Vote with your feet: respond to a statement about the vocabulary word by standing on the true or false side of the room. (can use colored tape on floor to divide room)

5. Four Corners: respond to multiple choice questions by standing in one of the four corners of the room (corner a, b, c, and d).

6. Role Play: groups or teams role play scenarios that communicate or connect with the meaning of the vocabulary word. (if you’re really brave, let students use your costume box)

7. Flashcards: create flashcards to review words and their meanings (using pictures or text).

8. Catch Phrase: use vocabulary/content words to play this game. (Teacher will need to create a hat with words/definitions…student draws one and gives clues to team mates…when timer stops, the team who does not have the hat gets to move forward on the game board)

9. Mind Maps: in small groups, create a mind map of the vocabulary word on large butcher paper or post it.

10. Connect 4: given any four concepts or words and blank paper, small groups of students decide their connection and graphically communicate it on the paper.

TIPS:

-Poker chips are great for keeping “score.” I keep them in a gallon ziplock and carry them around class with me to hand to students. I’m amazed how motivating this is to some kids and allows me to keep track of “points” quickly and easily.

-Inexpensive individual whiteboards are available from Oriental Trading Company
