Producer/Director – Talk

Atlanta, GA

Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) is hiring a Producer/Technical Director for our signature daily talk show “On Second Thought”, hosted by former NPR host Celeste Headlee. We’re looking for someone who’s equally comfortable diving deeply into the editorial and technical aspects of live radio. You will be part of a team that loves digging into issues to find the human side of policy debates and bring it to listeners in a highly engaging, sound rich way. This is a fast-paced show with lots of guests and sound elements. You’ll need to think fast on your feet and aim for perfection every day. GPB is a cross-platform organization where all content producers are expected to contribute to radio, television and digital. We’re a highly collaborative organization that values new ideas.

Candidate Qualifications:

• A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field

• Two years of journalism experience required, public radio experience ideal.

• Minimum one year working in live radio environment; talk show experience preferred. Must understand radio clocks and be able to have everyone in the control room adhere to the show clock.

• Demonstrated ability to identify news stories and distill complex matters. High-level writing and editing skills.

• Ability to produce well-written, contextual, engaging copy for host.

• Experience gathering and editing audio on Adobe Audition or similar software.

• Ability to quickly edit audio in a live broadcast environment

• Must be able to work varying shifts, to include seven days per week, weekends and holidays

• Some travel required.

Job Responsibilities:

• As the Producer:

o Pitch segment ideas for the show; pre-interview potential guests and book show guests.

o Produce audio segments that support the host/guest interviews.

• As the Director:

o In charge of the performance of the show while it’s on the air. S/he works with the board operator to make sure all tape is cued and sounds good and that all equipment is working properly. This will involve producing sound on the fly, during live broadcasts.

o Chooses all bumper and break music.

o Coordinates sponsorship breaks and other promos in accordance with broadcast logs

o Must be able to lead the control room environment firmly, while understanding the strengths/abilities of producers, hosts and board operators.

o Creates branded audio packages for the show (branding for segments and series, etc.)
