Contemporary U.S. and World History Learning Targets Semester 1 (Marking periods 1 & 2)

Unit 1 Learning Targets: Beginning of Cold War

1. I will be able to identify the differences between the United States and the Soviet Union that led to a prolonged state of tension between the two, called the Cold War.

2. I will be able to define the U.S. policy of containment and cite examples and details of how we implemented this policy.

3. I will be able to assess the effectiveness of the United Nations as a peacekeeping organization.

Unit 2 Learning Targets: Third World Independence

1. I will be able to assess the changes made to multiple aspects of Chinese life following the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War.

2. I will be able to analyze how the combination of the weakness of the European colonial powers following WWII and the emergence of nationalism on the Indian subcontinent and in Africa led to the emergence of independent nations.

3. I will be able to explain how historical experiences, combined with the atrocities of the holocaust, ultimately led to the formation of Israel.

4. I will be able to relate how the creation of Israel led to turmoil that continues to affect the Middle East region and the world.

Unit 3 Learning Targets: Domestic U.S. 1945-1960

1. I can explain how the Cold War fear of communism contributed to the Second Red Scare in which the civil liberties of many Americans were violated by the U.S. Government

2. I can identify the connections among the following:

a. The end of WWII and the return of veterans

b. economic expansion

c. growth in the birth rate (baby boom)

d. suburban growth

3. I can analyze the relationship between the concept of conformity and the social and cultural developments of the 1950s (suburbs, organizations, media, consumerism, auto culture, rise of the teenager, rock n’ roll, women’s roles, beat movement).

Unit 4 Learning Targets: Cold War Continues-Korea to Vietnam

1. I can demonstrate how new technologies heightened Cold War tensions between the U.S. and the communist powers during the time period from 1950 to 1970.

2. I can provide 2 examples of U.S. efforts to contain the spread of communism during the period of 1950-1970 and determine the effectiveness of both. (Korean War and Vietnam War)

3. I can analyze why the U.S. failed to achieve military and political objectives in Vietnam. (Resolve of communist forces, lack of popular support in America, ineffective war planning).

Unit 5 Learning Targets: Social Changes in the U.S. during the 1960s and 1970s.

1. I can identify and evaluate the tactics used to improve the conditions of minority groups in the U.S. (African-Americans, women, Latinos, Native Americans, and homosexuals).

2. I can assess the attempts made by the U.S. government to alleviate the problems of poverty and denial of civil rights during the 1960s.

3. I can recognize the legacies of the Counterculture Movement of the 1960s and 1970s on American society and culture (transition from conformity to individuality).
