Re:         2013 1098-T Tax Form Information

1098-T Tax forms for 2013 will be mailed on January 31, 2014 by our external vendor, ECSI. Included in the mailing you will also receive instructions on how to access an electronic copy of your 1098-T. Please note that ESU continues to use Box 2, Amounts Billed for Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses. Room and board (meals) charges are not included in the Box 2 calculation.

Your 2013 1098-T covers tuition and related expenses charged (Box 2), as well as, any Scholarships and/or Grants (Box 5) that you would have received for any registration activity that occurred during January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2013. Waivers, assistantships, grants and VA benefits are included in this category. Although part of the Winter Session occurs in the 2014 tax year, your registration and subsequent billing may have been completed in November or December 2013. Therefore, as initial billing for Winter Session and/or Spring 2014 took place in the 2013 tax year, they would be reflected in Box 2 of the 1098-T form.

We strongly encourage you to refer to your billing statements for semesters occurring during 2013 to obtain information appropriate for claiming tax benefits related to qualified education expenses and we recommend that you consult your tax advisor to discuss your individual facts and circumstances. The Student Enrollment Center staff cannot provide tax advice to you. For all currently enrolled students, details of the individual transactions that make up your qualified billable charges (Box 2) and/or your scholarships and grants (Box 4) are available by accessing your e-bills for those semesters in the myESU portal.
