Internet Safety and Informational Meeting

On November 3rd, between 6:30-7:30 pm, Geneseo High School will be hosting an informational meeting on Internet and app safety in the high school auditorium. The forum will focus on the new laws in Illinois pertaining to discipline as well as cover topics to help parents become aware of and monitor what their kids are doing online and through various phone applications. We will also have a question and answer session that will allow parents to ask specific questions regarding technology and information.

Calling ALL Parents!

Would you like to know how your child is wired? Would you like to improve the communication with your child? Would you like to help them work through conflicts?

Geneseo High School would like to introduce you to the Core Value Index, also known as CVI. Lynn Taylor, the founder of Taylor Protocols, explains it like this......

"Discover your innate core values, your wired-in Human Operating System TM. Begin your discovery of Core Values Con-

October 2015

sciousness, a new pathway to personal excellence and happiness."

Students will be taking the CVI during the school day.

Would you like to take the CVI so you know what the buzz is about? It only takes about 10 minutes online, and it's free.

Please go to our district website at and click on the Parent CVI link and take the Core Value Index evaluation. After taking the CVI evaluation, please print out your results and bring them to one of the meetings listed below. It is important to take the CVI before attending one of the meetings.

Please join us for one of the following meetings at the Geneseo High School Auditorium:

Wednesday, October 21, 2015 @ 7:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 22, 2015 @ 7:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m.

Lynn Taylor, from Taylor Protocols, will be presenting an overview of CVI and will help you understand your results.

Information about PARCC & ACT This is the latest from Dr. Tony Smith's (State Superintendent) newsletter to school administrators about PARCC and the future of the ACT test. I've had conversations with many of you over the past few weeks and one topic that keeps coming up is your concern about PARCC testing schedules for the upcoming spring. Although we are still awaiting budget decisions for this fiscal year, I recognize you need to finalize your spring schedules. In order to help you plan, we will only be requiring that high schools administer the same assessments they administered during the 201415 school year. If additional funding becomes available in time to secure additional high school assessments, we will make those available online on an optional basis for interested schools. Similarly, there is no new information about a college-entrance exam at this point either. The bids are being evaluated, but ultimately our ability to fund an assessment for this spring is related to the state budget.

Student Council: The GHS Student Council recently planned the 2015 "Light Up the Night" Homecoming. Our committees did a great job in preparing the elections, the coronation, the dance and the parade. They put forth great efforts and had a very successful Homecoming. The Homecoming Court was announced at the annual pep rally on Thursday, Sept 24 with the routines of the

Maplettes, cheerleaders, and introductions of the Varsity football players; along with the traditional burning of the "G." The fall sport teams, Homecoming Royalty and Grand Marshalls Roger and Mary Miller, highlighted the parade held on Friday, Sept. 25. The Homecoming Dance was a huge success, held Sat. Sept 26 in the big gym. Over 600 students attended this fun filled evening. The weather could not have been better and all enjoyed a great week.

Some schools find that Homecoming is a fading tradition. However, Homecoming is hip again at GHS! And we're thrilled! Research indicates that high school students are more successful when they participate in extra-curricular activities. And since Homecoming invites all students to participate, some new changes were planned for Homecoming to encourage student engagement this year!

More than 125 students participated in a new Homecoming float-building competition: Float Face-off! The event challenged students to build their Homecoming parade floats in a single night -- all four floats in the same building! It was an evening of camaraderie & competition, free food, music and frenzied float-building, and at 10PM when the lights went out, the floats looked remarkable! Class

sponsors organized the event, and several GHS staff members came to help, too. The City of Geneseo even helped by providing the Richmond Hill shed to build and house the floats until the parade, and city workers maneuvered the floats in and out of the building. It became a school-city collaborative effort!

Likewise, the new Homecoming points competition among the four classes spurred participation in other Homecoming activities. Large numbers of students and staff participated in dress-up days and attended home athletic events, earning points for respective classes. The prize: root beer floats for the winning class compliments of Student Council! Droves of students and staff arrived to school dressed up for daily themes! One of the highlights was looking down the hallways on Thursday at a sea of gold attire -- in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness.

All of this Homecoming excitement resulted in a packed house at the Homecoming dance! We had so many students attend the dance this year we had to make a food/drink run at 8PM to resupply in order to have ample refreshments!

In the end, when some schools are looking at declining participation in long-standing traditions like Homecoming, GHS students and staff decided to not follow the current trend. Rather, we looked for new ideas and made constructive changes to create positive experiences for our GHS students.

Geneseo High School is excited to announce that it has been selected to participate in Illinois College Application Month, an annual event sponsored by the Geneseo High School and the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC).

Geneseo High School's event will be held on October 29, 2015. During the Illinois College Application Day event, seniors will receive hands-on assistance as they navigate the college application process. Assistance will be provided by ISAC through the ISACorps, in helping students apply and research different options for paying for college. The goal is for each student who has not applied to a college and plans to attend a two year or four year college in the fall of 2016, to successfully complete at least one college admission application during the event.
