Districts Need to Submit List of Teachers Interested in Grant Program to Teach STEM in Nonpublic Schools

New legislation establishes a new grant program that provides additional remuneration for public school teachers to teach STEM classes in nonpublic schools during hours mutually agreed upon by the teacher, district and nonpublic school. Eligible teachers must meet one of the following criteria: hold certification to teach STEM, be enrolled in a STEM program, or provide a written commitment to pursue a STEM program within two years.

Key steps/actions 1. Public school districts must notify all teachers employed by the district of the grant program, and submit a list

of the teachers interested in participating in the program to their Executive County Superintendent office by January 15, 2020. The list must include the following information: ? District code and name ? Each teacher's name, phone number, email address and NJ certification held

2. The Executive County Superintendents will share the lists with nonpublic schools upon request.

3. Nonpublic schools that wish to participate in the grant program will contact teachers on the lists directly to pursue possible teaching arrangements.

4. The Department plans to post the grant application on its website in February and will announce via a Broadcast memo when it is available.

5. Nonpublic schools that wish to participate in the grant program will submit the application, including an agreement to the teaching hours signed by the nonpublic school, school district, and eligible teacher.

6. Grant winners will be announced in the spring, and teaching will begin in the 2020-21 school year. The teachers' renumeration will be based on their annual salary as calculated on a per-hour basis times the number of hours teaching at the nonpublic school.

Background The grant program is designed to incentivize teachers to obtain the necessary qualifications to teach STEM subjects; incentivize individuals to enter the teaching profession to fill the demand for qualified educators in STEM subjects; help address the difficulties public and nonpublic schools face in attracting qualified educators in the STEM fields; and improve statewide access to education in the STEM fields to address the workforce demands of New Jersey's economy.
