Lesson Plan – Homogenous and Heterogeneous Mixtures

Assumptions: Students understand a mixture is two or more things put together. Students understand the definitions for same and different.

Anticipatory Set:

Getting Attention Focused: Place a red fruit-filled Jell-O cup and a red plain Jell-O cup in front of the class, and discuss how they are the same and different.

Tapping Prior Knowledge: I am a human being and ET is an alien; ET is not

like me. ET is within the word heterogeneous which means “other kind” or different.

Materials: clear plastic cups, plastic spoons, salt, pepper, water, kool-aid, sand, jello cups, glue, can of peas and carrots, milk, 4 ounces of cereal, worksheet, notebook paper, pencil, permanent marker, pictures of 2 homogeneous mixtures and 2 heterogeneous mixtures.

Grade Level: 5th grade

Objectives:

Given 20 minutes and a worksheet with 5 household items and foods, TLW

|circle if a type of mixture is heterogeneous or homogeneous, with no more than 1 out of 5 answered incorrectly. |

Teacher/Student Activities

Modeling: a1) Mix two homogeneous mixtures (kool-aid and water, glue and water) in separate cups with clean spoons. Show how the mixtures are homogeneous because it is made of two ingredients but is the same throughout. Label the cups one and two. a2) Mix two heterogeneous mixtures (peas and carrots, milk and cereal) in separate cups with clean spoons. Show how the mixtures are heterogeneous [ET is not like me, ET is within the word heterogeneous which means “other kind” or different] because they are made of two things which are easily seen and separated. Label the cups three and four. b1) Write homogeneous mixture on the board with the cup numbers and their contents. Write why it is homogeneous. Show the checklist to the students in order to evaluate why the mixture is homogeneous. b2) Write heterogeneous mixture on the board with the cup numbers and their contents. Write why it is heterogeneous. Use the checklist to evaluate the explanation for a heterogeneous mixture.

Guided Practice: A1) Show the class a picture of a fruit salad and have the students circle what type of mixture it is and paraphrase why the mixture is homogeneous or heterogeneous with the use of prior knowledge hints mentioned. A2) Show the class a picture of a bowl filled with milk and cereal. Allow the students to circle what type of mixture it is along with an explanation of why without the help of the given hints. B1) Show students a picture of a cup of coffee and repeat the process in a1 along with why it is not heterogeneous with the use of prior knowledge hints mentioned. Continue the process with a picture of a jar of mustard. B2) Students will circle homogeneous or heterogeneous and paraphrase why the mixture is the circled choice without giving hints. The class will discuss their responses.

Independent Practice: In groups of four, the students will think of and write down four things that are mixtures and tell if they are heterogeneous or homogeneous, along with an explanation for each mixture. Allow students to share their findings with the class.

Closure: What type of mixtures did we discuss today? What is the difference between the two? How are the mixtures the same? What will help you determine if a mixture is heterogeneous or homogeneous? What are some examples of a heterogeneous mixture/homogeneous mixture?

Mixture – combination of 2 or more ingredients or substances.

Two types of mixtures are:

1. Homogeneous Mixture

A mixture that is the same throughout its container, and its ingredients can not be separated.

2. Heterogeneous Mixture

A mixture that is different throughout its container and its ingredients can be separated.

1. Kool-aid and water is a homogeneous mixture.

It is a homogeneous mixture because the water and glue blended together to create the same mixture.
