VISUAL ART/DESIGN STUDY REPORT

Your report should be approximately 1500 - 2000 words in length and must have an obvious link with your mandatory practical unit. You have the option of presenting your final report in a booklet format, as separate sheets or as a power point presentation. You may choose to either type or write your final report. It is essential that care is taken with the final appearance of the report and effort must be made to create an individual and interesting presentation. The appearance is important and the SQA will view favourably of use of visual communication such as annotation, sketches, illustrations, diagrams etc.

When deciding the content and subject matter of your report you might consider some of the following: -

VISUAL ART

• Single artist

• Compare two artists working with the same subject matter

• Art movement/style focusing on work of two artists

• Compare two artists using the same technique/materials

• Compare a contemporary artist with an artists from a previous era

• Investigate works of art from a particular country/culture

DESIGN

• Single designer

• Compare work of two designers

• Look at design movement

• Investigate how a design company/fashion label has evolved their style over time

• Compare work of two designers who use similar influences/sources

• Compare a contemporary designer with a designer from a previous era

• Investigate design styles of a different country/culture

These are just a few suggestions to help you get started. You may come up with some ideas of your own which you can discuss with your class teacher.

COURSE OUTLINE

ADVANCED HIGHER

ART AND DESIGN

For the Advanced Higher course you have the choice of producing either a DESIGN or an EXPRESSIVE practical folio of work. This will be your Major unit of work.

The Major unit of work will be accompanied by a Study Report and also a Statement of Intent.

Or you can complete an EXPRESSIVE and a DESIGN unit complete with a Statement of Intent.

ASSESSMENT OF WORK

Both major and minor units of assessment must pass internal assessment. This will be measured against national requirements. Work passing the internal assessment will, at the end of the course, be submitted to the SQA for final examination.

The Advanced Higher Art and Design course takes the form of a personal enquiry. It is important that when selecting your theme you choose a strong area of study that you are enthusiastic about and will sustain your work throughout the whole year. You will negotiate your theme with your class teacher then undertake a work schedule where you will be required to meet a series of deadline dates.

It is crucial that you take responsibility for you own work schedule and endeavour to meet all deadline dates set.

REMEMBER TO CREATE A CLEAR LINK WITH YOUR OWN WORK AND THE DESIGNERS YOU HAVE SELECTED

It is important that in the report you make reference to ways in which your area of study might have influenced or affected your practical work in terms of subject matter, use of materials, use of visual/design elements etc.

Also aim to make reference to contemporary issues in your written report.

REMEMBER TO CREATE A CLEAR LINK WITH YOUR OWN WORK AND THE ARTISTS YOU HAVE SELECTED
