ToFlyofnottoFly - Teacher’s instruction

ToFlyofnottoFly - Teacher’s instruction

The teacher should first read the introduction. This additional instruction is meant as an additional reminder to keep track of the right sequence of steps and events.

1. The introduction to the game should be handed out in the lesson a class or two before the actual playing of the game and should be read carefully by all students. The different roles can best be distributed at this same lesson. In case the roles are distributed at the beginning of the game the preparation for the game will take some 15 minutes time for reading and internalizing the role.

2. The group can decide to put some money apart as an "investment" in their common enterprise. If this is done, it should be a decision supported by the whole group and the dollar amount from each participant should be determined. Students should agree upon a charitable cause to which the money will be given should the plane "crash" or the company go bankrupt. The company goes bankrupt if the role playing students make the decision to cancel the maiden flight.

3. The students who do not have a main role in the game are observers. These can be divided into groups which will focus on one of four different elements of the play. (See observer instructions).

4. Two roles, M_ Martinez and M_ Peterson, will leave the room at the beginning of the game and enter after exactly 10 minutes. The whole game should not last longer than 40 minutes, at the end of which a final decision should be reached. After each 10 minutes new actors become involved in the role game. If the chairman of the meeting or other participants in the meeting tend to take longer than 10 minutes a game leader might bring it to the attention of the group and motion that the next phase should be entered.

5. In the introduction there are some comments which may help evaluate the game. Otherwise teachers should determine the evaluative criteria before play.

6. If the students make their final decision to fly the plane, a dice or coin should be tossed. This toss will determine whether the airplane crashes or not.
