INTRODUCTION - Amazon S3

To seniors and parents/guardians:

The purpose of this booklet is to guide parents and students to sources of funds that will help with the cost of a college education. As you begin to look through this booklet, it will quickly become evident that many organizations are eager to help qualified students with the cost of higher education.

In the booklet, you will find scholarships listed according to the following classifications and level of competitiveness:

• Local,

• Institutional (college),

• State, and

• National.

A section describing different types of financial aid such as grants and loans has also been included.

The scholarships listed in this guide are typical scholarships in which Crowder High School students might want to apply. This list is long, but in no way includes all the sources of funds available to students. As the year progresses, I will be passing along any additional information that may become available.

This is intended to be a starting point for your scholarship and financial aid search. Please feel free to check with me for more information regarding scholarships, financial aid, or any other questions you may have.

Best Wishes for a great senior year,

Patti Tucker

PUBLIC COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

When you apply for admission to an Oklahoma state college or university, the institution will look at either your score on a national test (ACT or SAT), your high school grade point average (GPA) and where your average ranks within your high school class, or your GPA in the 15 high school core courses required for college entry.

RESEARCH UNIVERSITIES

Oklahoma State University - Score a 24 ACT/1160 SAT or have a 3.0 GPA and rank in the top 33 percent of your class or have a 3.0 GPA and a 21 ACT/1060 SAT.

University of Oklahoma - Score a 24 ACT/1160 SAT and have a 3.0 GPA or rank in the top 50 percent of your class or have a 3.0 GPA and rank in the top 25 percent of your class.

PUBLIC LIBERAL ARTS UNIVERSITY

University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma - Score a 24 ACT/1160 SAT and have a 3.0 GPA or rank in the top 50 percent of your class or have a 3.0 GPA and rank in the top 25 percent of your class or have a 3.0 GPA and a 22 ACT/1100 SAT.

REGIONAL UNIVERSITIES (4 year such as sosu, ecu, nsu, etc.)

Score a 20 ACT/1030 SAT or have a 2.7 GPA and rank in the top 50 percent of your class or have a 2.7 GPA.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES (any 2 year or junior college)

You don't need to make certain scores, but you should fulfill the following requirements: take required high school classes and graduate from an accredited high school or have a GED and take the ACT exam.

ACT OR SAT???

In Oklahoma the overwhelming choice is the ACT. About two-thirds of the state’s high school seniors have taken it at least once by the time they graduate. Only eleven percent take the SAT. There are, however, important differences between the two.

WARNING!!!

*DON’T GET SCAMMED ON YOUR WAY TO COLLEGE*

Look for six signs that a scholarship search may be a scholarship scam!

If you hear:

1. “This scholarship is guaranteed or your money back.”

2. “You can’t get this information anywhere else.”

3. “May I have your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship?”

4. “We’ll do all the work.”

5. “The scholarship will cost some money.”

6. “You’ve been selected by a ‘national foundation’ to receive a scholarship,” or “You’re a finalist in a contest” (that you never entered).

STOP! ASK FOR MORE INFORMATION AND CHECK IT OUT!

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS

The majority of scholarship money is awarded by the individual colleges. It is important that the student apply for admissions early to the colleges of their choice and then apply for all the scholarships for which he/she is eligible at that college.

After institutional scholarships,

the remaining scholarships

increase in competitiveness

with each level

from local… to state… to national.

WHAT IT COSTS!

$ College expenses vary depending on the type of college or university, the number of courses a student takes, a student’s major and his or her personal lifestyle, among other factors.

$ Tuition and mandatory fees at Oklahoma state colleges and universities are considerably lower than average tuition at similar institutions in other states. Mandatory fees include, but are not limited to, library fees, technology services fees, student activity fees, and assessment fees.

$ In addition, some academic courses also charge academic service fees for the use of equipment and facilities, private instruction, and testing/clinical services.

$ The chart below provides an estimate of annual college costs for an undergraduate resident student carrying 15 hours per semester at a state college or university during the 2011-2012 academic year. Though subject to change, the costs can serve as a basis for estimating college expenses.

$ Independent (or private) colleges and universities are substantially more expensive than state colleges and universities, so please be aware of those costs before applying to these private institutions.
