(10 minutes)If using as main nutrition activity, see instructions belowNUTRITION ACTIVITYHealthy Helping MyPlate Activity10 MinutesMaterials Needed:Healthy Helping MatFruit CardsVegetable CardsGrain Group CardsDairy Group CardsProtein Group CardsThis activity is highly encouraged to complete, especially if educator is not allowed to serve snack.Students can be sitting at their assigned desks/tables at the beginning of the activity.Place the Healthy Helping Mat on the floor.Ask the students if they remember the food groups they’ve helped sort so far since we’ve been together (fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy). Ask them the last food group we have not sorted yet. (Protein group)Protein foods include meats, eggs, nuts, seeds and beans. Protein helps build and repair our muscles.Tell them this week, along with the fruit, vegetable, grain and dairy group cards, protein group cards will be passed out too. Now they will be placing a card in all the sections of the MyPlate! Pass out the cards. The classroom teacher can be passing out the cards while you are talking to the students as well. Think, Pair, Share: If students are sitting in groups, have them quietly discuss what food group their card should go in. If they are sitting in rows, have them partner up.Next, call one group at a time to come up to the mat and place their card in the fruit, vegetable, grain, dairy and protein sections on the plate. It’s ok if they get it wrong. We will figure it out at the end when all cards are placed on the mat. Once the student has placed their card where they think it goes, have them find a spot around the mat to sit crisscross applesauce. Proceed to call all the groups, one at a time, until all the cards have been placed on the mat.Once all cards are placed, have them observe all the cards and think about if they are in the correct section. If not, which cards should be switched? Students should raise their hand to speak. Have that student make the switch.“Awesome job! Now I think you are ready for our post survey! Walk back to your seat and grab a pencil.”CLOSING5 minutes Materials needed:Parent NewslettersWhat fun we’ve had today in nutrition class! We read a story and shared out thoughts about family mealsWe did a nutrition activity and…-Talked about new food or recipe offered; or-Completed out handout activity that helped us…We gave our bodies some exercise to keep our hearts healthy, our muscles/bones strong and our minds happy!Conclude the lesson with:“Now I have a newsletter for you to take home to your parents. It will tell them about all the things we did in class today. Be sure to explain to them what you like the most about today’s lesson. You might also tell them about the new foods you tasted today.”Next time, we are going to learn about (lesson topic) and have more fun!-20974056327140Read for Health – Grade 1Lesson OutlineFamily Meals500Read for Health – Grade 1Lesson OutlineFamily Meals5Thank you for being such great listeners and doers!143002024384000455295045720004288155-1524000Instructions for Rainbow Fruit Salad IngredientsSnack SuppliesChoose 4-5 options below to create a rainbow of fruits.Suggestions for 20-25 tastes:1-2 Red apples1-2 Pears or 3 Kiwi? cantaloupe or 2 cans mandarin oranges1 small bunch grapes, each grape cut in halfMixing bowlSpoon 3 oz. pill cups or platesNapkinsForksCoolerSanitizer wipesRedOrange/YellowGreenBlue/PurpleStrawberriesApplesRaspberriesWatermelonCantaloupeMangoMandarin OrangesPineapplePearsKiwiHoneydewGrapesBlueberriesBlackberriesPlumsGrapesFor a 30-minute lesson, have salad already prepared.Preparation before going to the classroomWash and chop fruit and place in a container with a tight-fitting lid. Each color should have its own container. Classroom directions for snack preparationChoose four student helpers to help assemble the fruit salad. Each student will place a bag of colored fruit in the mixing bowl. As the student is doing that, ask the class what other fruits come in that color. Continue to do this until all the ingredients are in the bowl. While portioning fruit salad into cups or plates, have your helpers pass out napkins and forks and have the entire class sit in a circle on the floor. The classroom teacher can help pass out the snack. Point out that as a class, they are a type of family too. They eat lunch together every day at school! Encourage the students to have a “family” discussion talking about:Things they like to do.What makes them happy? What’s their favorite physical activity? What is their favorite thing they liked about nutrition class?EDUCATOR TIP: Be aware of the amount of time you have for this lesson. You might have to have all the ingredients in the bowl ready to go, but you can still have the students eat the snack in a “family meal” style.-933451224280Read for Health – Grade 1Lesson OutlineFamily Meals600Read for Health – Grade 1Lesson OutlineFamily Meals6-1600203026410Read for Health – Grade 1Lesson OutlineFamily Meals700Read for Health – Grade 1Lesson OutlineFamily Meals7 ................
