Sticking With God: Knowing His Love Week 5: God Sent His Son to Show His Love

This includes: Leader Preparation Lesson Guide

LEADER PREPARATION

BIBLE BASIS Before we make a decision to follow Christ, our sin separates us from God like a heavy curtain. We can't have a relationship with him until that sin is removed. Our Bible focus for this lesson tells us that when Christ died, the curtain in the Temple that separated the people from God's presence was torn in two--from top to bottom. That was a way God demonstrated that we're no longer separated by our sins from God's great love. Use this lesson to help children experience God's love freely by discovering a relationship with Jesus.

DISCOVERY POINT God sent his Son to show his love.

BIBLE FOCUS Mark 15:24-39; 16:1-8

KEY VERSE "But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners" (Romans 5:8).

TEACHING PREP The short overview below is designed to help you prepare for your lesson.

Supplies You'll Need: Sticking With God: Knowing His Love (Year 1/Quarter 3) CD, LIVE Children's Curriculum (Year 1) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player, "God Loves You!" handout, newsprint, tape, paper, pens, Bibles, poster board, and marker

Before This Lesson ? Print the "God Loves You!" handout. You'll need one copy per team of four kids. ? Make a curtain out of newsprint. Gather three or four sheets of newsprint that are almost as long as the width of your meeting area. Tape the sheets together so it's tall enough that kids can't see over it. ? Assemble Bible Exploration Kits (one per four kids): one Bible, "God Loves You!" handout, paper, pens. ? Write "God Sent His Son to Show His Love" on a piece of poster board. Tape the poster at the front of your meeting area. ? Review Mark 15:24-39; 16:1-8. ? Cue "Into the Bible" (Track 1) on Sticking With God: Knowing His Love (Year 1/Quarter 3) CD or (Quarter 3/Track 1) on the LIVE Children's Curriculum (Year 1) DVD. ? Huddle briefly with your volunteers beforehand. Answer any questions they have. Encourage them and pray.

PARENT EMAIL

We've provided you with a "Family Devotion" handout to send the Bible learning and faith discovery home. When kids and parents have faith discussions regularly, kids' faith multiplies.

So we've given you two options: ? Print the "Family Devotion" handout and make enough copies for each child to take one home. ? Email the "Family Devotion" to families before or after the actual lesson.

Or why not do both? That way you'll double the opportunities for parents to actually get the handout.

2. Have children form two groups, and send groups to opposite sides of the room. Choose two children to hold the newsprint curtain in the middle of the room so it separates the two groups.

Tell groups that they'll each receive a message that they can't share with the other group. Quietly tell group 1 the following message: God sent his Son to show his love. Then tell group 2 this message: Now we can have a relationship with God.

Have children write on their papers the messages they heard and stand against the wall that's farthest away from the newsprint. SAY: Your job will be to get your message to the other team. You can do whatever is necessary to your piece of paper to get it to the other side, but you can't move from your spot or talk. Go! (If your room is small enough that getting paper messages across the room is easy, have kids blow up and write the messages on balloons. To avoid choking hazards, be sure to pick up pieces of any broken balloons and dispose of them promptly.)

3. After each group has attempted to get its message to the other side, ASK: ? What helped or didn't help to get your message across? ? What did God do to get his message to us? SAY: God sent his Son to show his love. Just as the curtain separates you

from the other group, our sin separates us from God. But when Jesus died and rose again, he changed all that. Let's see what he did.

Have kids rip the newsprint curtain. Have group 1 yell its message across to group 2, and then have group 2 yell its message to group 1. SAY: Jesus made it possible to have a friendship with God and be with God forever. Let's learn more about that.

Leave the pieces of paper where they are for the beginning of Let's Explore!

LET'S EXPLORE! Supplies: assembled Bible Exploration Kits, papers from Welcome!

1. SAY: God sent his Son to show his love to us. We were separated from God's love by our sin. When Jesus died on the cross, something amazing happened in the Temple. Here's a hint: Pick up a piece of paper in front of you. When we count down from 3, we're all going to rip our papers at the same time--from the top to the bottom. Three, two, one, rip! That's our clue. Let's read our Bible passage to discover what it means.

2. Help children form Bible Crews of four, and give each crew a Bible Exploration Kit. Have crews take the Bibles out of their kits, find Mark 15:24-39, and take turns reading the verses. Have the crews raise their hands when they discover the amazing thing that happened in the Temple when Jesus died.

3. SAY: When Jesus died for our sins, the curtain in the Temple was torn from top to bottom. The curtain in the Temple separated the people from God. Before Jesus, only one person could go past the curtain into God's presence. Everyone else had to stay out. But God sent his Son to show his love for us. When Jesus died, he made it possible for us to experience God's love and have a relationship with him.

Let's find out what happened next. Read Mark 16:1-8 in your crew. When you find out what happened, have one person in your crew run to me and tell me the answer.

After all the crews run to you with the answer, SAY: Mary was so excited to learn that Jesus was alive that she ran to tell the disciples right away!

ASK: ? How did God show his love to Mary? ? What's one way God has shown his love for you in the past week?

4. Have crews find the "God Loves You!" handout in their Bible Exploration Kits and follow the directions.

When groups finish their lists, read Romans 5:8 aloud: "But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners."

ASK: ? How does this verse show God's love? SAY: God has always loved us. But we were separated from that love by our sins. God sent his Son to show his love. We deserve to be punished for our sin, but God gave his own Son to take that punishment for us. We can experience that love when we have a relationship with Jesus and believe in him.

LET'S PRAISE! Supplies: Sticking With God: Knowing His Love (Year 1/Quarter 3) CD or LIVE Children's Curriculum (Year 1) DVD, CD player or TV/DVD player

1. Have kids form pairs. ASK: ? Why did God send his Son? ? How can you show God your love in return? SAY: Let's celebrate that God sent his Son to show his love. After Jesus rose from the dead, the first Christians would greet each other

like this: One would say, "He is risen!" and the other would respond, "He is risen indeed!"

Let's try that. I'll say, "He is risen!" and then you shout, "He is risen indeed!"

Go through the statement and response several times, then SAY: Now that's something to praise God about!

2. Set up the Sticking With God: Knowing His Love (Year 1/Quarter 3) CD or the LIVE Children's Curriculum (Year 1) DVD. PLAY:

? "His Great Love" (Romans 5:8) (CD Track 5) (DVD Quarter 3/Track 5) God loves us. God sent his Son to die for us Because of His great love.

God loves us. God sent his son to die for us Because of His great love.

(Chorus) His great love, God showed his great big love By sending Christ to die for us While we were still sinners.

His great love, God showed his great big love By sending Christ to die for us

While we were still sinners.

(Repeat)

His great love, His great love, His great love, His great love, His great love.

? "God Loved the World So Much" (John 3:16) (CD Track 6) (DVD Quarter 3/Track 6)

Here we are, here we are, And we're feeling alive 'Cause Jesus saved our lives. Jesus made us see. God is love; God is good. God is bigger than sin. It's easy to let him in. All you gotta do is believe.

(Chorus) God loved the world so much he gave his only Son. God loved the world so much he gave his only Son, So whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

We can try, we can try but it's not enough. We can't earn God's love because it's already free. So give it up, give it up, Give your sin to the Lord. You know you can be sure he's all that you will need.

(Chorus)

Whoever believes in him, whoever believes in him, whoever believes in him Will not perish, but have eternal life.

? "The Lord is Merciful" (CD Track 7) (DVD Quarter 3/Track 7) The Lord is merciful and compassionate, Slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. The Lord is merciful and compassionate, Slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.

There is nothing that I could do That you would not forgive. Your grace is more than enough, More than enough for me.

The Lord is merciful and compassionate, Slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.

LET'S PRAY! Supplies: prepared poster board, marker, Sticking With God: Knowing His Love (Year 1/Quarter 3) CD, CD player

1. SAY: Let's thank God from our hearts because God sent his Son to show his love. Think about why Jesus died for you and how you can show your love for him.

When you finish praying, you may come to the poster and make a mark on the board. Your mark will represent your sins that have kept you away from God. When each of us has made a mark, we'll tear the poster--just like the curtain in the Temple was torn from top to bottom--to show that we can be with God forever if we believe in Jesus.

2. Play "Soft Music 1" (Track 17) from the Sticking With God: Knowing His Love (Year 1/Quarter 3) CD as the children pray. After everyone has made a mark, rip the poster from top to bottom as you SAY: Thank you, God. In Jesus' name, amen.

HIGH FIVES Supplies: none

SAY: As we leave, let's celebrate that Jesus rose from the dead to show us God's love. Give three people a high five and say, "He is risen indeed!"

FOR-EXTRA-TIME ACTIVITIES A Cross of Love Supplies: 2-inch hearts cut from craft foam, markers, tape Have kids write their names on foam hearts. Have kids tape their hearts to the wall in the shape of a cross. Talk about how God showed his love by sending Jesus to die on the cross for us.

Quick on the Draw

Supplies: "Quick on the Draw Cards" handout, scissors, paper, markers Print the "Quick on the Draw Cards" handout, and cut the cards out. You'll need one set of cards for every Bible Crew. Give a different card to each child on a crew, and tell kids not to show anyone. Have kids take turns drawing pictures to get their partners to guess what's on their cards. Explain that each phrase is a part of today's story.

Hiding It in Your Heart Supplies: chalkboard and chalk or dry erase board and marker, paper, pens Write Romans 5:8 on a chalkboard or dry erase board in the following way: 1) God showed his great love for us 2) By sending Christ to die for us 3) While we were still sinners. Have each crew draw symbols on separate cue cards to help them remember each part of the Key Verse. For example, they could draw a big heart with the word God written in the center to represent the first line.

Create a Bible Dictionary Supplies: paper, markers, dictionary, CD player, Sticking With God: Knowing His Love (Year 1/Quarter 3) CD Ask kids to create one or more pages, each with a new word, for a Bible dictionary. Have kids suggest words from today's lesson--sinners and tomb are two suggestions. Have them write each word on a sheet of paper in fun letters, add a definition, list Scripture references, and make illustrations. Play "The Books of the Bible Song" (Track 8), from the Sticking With God: Knowing His Love (Year 1/Quarter 3) CD while kids work. Add each page to a threering binder, and watch the dictionary grow!
