Speech #3: The Informative Speech

Cultural Group PresentationAssignment Description: The goal of this group presentation is to simply inform the audience by imparting knowledge and understanding about a culture/country outside of the United States. Your goal is not to express your attitude or personal viewpoint on the culture. Just provide the facts so the audience can decide for themselves. Value: 170 points TotalSpeech: 100 pointsWritten work: 70 pointsTime Requirements: Each participant must spend 2:30-5:30 minutes on their particular portion of the speech plus the group must include a least two activities to vary the speech (these two activities do not count toward any individual’s speech time). I recommend each student choose a topic from “below the surface” on the cultural iceberg. For example, interactive activities might include a brief game, a worksheet, a before/after quiz, exercise demonstration, teaching a folk dance from the culture, sharing cuisine from the culture, or introducing and role playing greetings for this culture Each participant must spend 2:30-5:30 minutes on their particular portion of the speech. I recommend each student choose a topic from “below the surface” on the cultural iceberg. If participation continues to be a problem for any particular group member, the group can come to the instructor with the unresolved issues. In this situation, the nonparticipating student will likely be asked to complete an individual informative speech on the due date with one interactive activity and 5 sources.Working Outline: The group chooses whether to turn in one group outline or individual outlines. Use good organization as you prepare your speech. Remember:Written in complete sentences with complete sentence main points.Uses proper outline format (notation, indentation). One source per person- citation (written) in the outline, works cited, and then state aloud during speech.Transitions employed effectively between Main Points.A Bibliography or Works Cited list of your sources using MLA or APA format.Visual Aids: If you wish to use a visual aid, the audience should not feel that the visual aid has been thrown in at the last minute or that the speech would have been equally good or even better if no visual aid had been used. Refer Part 6 for types of visual aids and guidelines on preparing and presenting effective visual aids. If using technology, always have a back-up plan. Visual Aids should rarely have words- only materials that add to the message.Sources: One source per person is required for this speech presentation. Consider the legitimacy, recency, credibility, balance, and accuracy of your sources. State WHO the source is and why they are qualified, not just the statistic/fact/quote/example from the source. A web address is NOT a source; it is merely the location of the source. Cite the original source of the information. Your sources must be :cited aloud in your speechwritten into your Formal Outline where the supporting material from the source occurslisted in your Bibliography/Works Cited list.Bibliography/Works Cited list: Required for this speech. List the sources using either MLA or APA format. Include as part of your Formal Outline.Cultural Group PresentationEvaluation FormSpeaker ______________________________________________Topic ________________________________________________Rate the speaker on each point:E-excellent G-good A-average F-fair P-poorPresentation Mechanics:Gained attention and interestE G A F PIntroduced culture clearlyE G A F PMaintained strong eye contact E G A F PNatural and conversational delivery E G A F PAvoided distracting mannerisms E G A F PArticulated words clearly E G A F PSubtopics are unified and presented as wholeE G A F PCultural Components:Subtopics chosen “below surface”E G A F PDepicts information accuratelyE G A F PCourse concepts are statedE G A F PRelates information to course conceptsE G A F PHofstede’s dimensions are addressed by each individualE G A F PGroup shows breadth of knowledgeE G A F PGroup does not cast judgment on practices of cultureE G A F PGroup presents information in comparison to USE G A F PCitations:Sources cited clearly aloudE G A F PSourcea from credible publicationE G A F PSources vary from more than one originE G A F PActivitiesActivity 1 planned, executed, and participativeE G A F PActivity 1 planned, executed, and participativeE G A F PWhat did the group do most effectively? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________What should the group pay special attention to next time? ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________General Comments ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Presentation SCORE/100Written Preparation/70 ................
