Summative Culminating Activity Timeline

Defining Moments of Canadian Identity and Canadian Heroes

Create a timeline from WW1 to the present. Specifics follow, but here are the decades you are considering:

1911 - 1920

1921 - 1930

1931 - 1940

1941 - 1950

1951 - 1960

1961 - 1970

1971 - 1980

1981 - 1990

1991 – present

Your Timeline will have THREE entries for each decade, according to the following requirements:

Requirement One

A Defining Moment of Canadian Identity for each decade with an explanation of your choice. There is no wrong answer so long as you can support your choice. The write-up (also included on the timeline) should be long enough to make your choice clear.

Requirement Two

A Canadian Hero from each decade, who you feel embodies the spirit of heroism. I will be paying attention that your timeline is not full of (mostly dead) white guys, so you may have to dig a little deeper! The write-up should be long enough to make your choice clear. It may be simply one event or accomplishment of this person. Defend your choice.

Requirement Three

Canadian Identity through Sport, Culture, Art, Technology

Choose ONE of the following areas:

movies

music

fashion

poetry and literature

visual art

sport

technology

Follow the area of choice through the decades including ONE entry for each decade. Demonstrate how your chosen field has been developed with a short write-up.

Illustrations: The timeline will be illustrated. Not every entry must be illustrated, but there should be at least one illustration per decade. Think about the overall visual impact of your timeline. If you must use computer art, make it NEAT.

MLA: You must use MLA format. Be sure to use in-text citations as well as a Works Cited page. Computer illustrations/photos must also have a source. (This is one very good reason to use hand-drawn illustrations). Remember that a list of URLs does not make a Works Cited page.

How do I do it? Your timeline can be electronic (slideshow - make sure it is a version that we can see at school BEFORE you create it), on long paper (shelf paper would be good!) or a series of bristol boards. Again – THINK OF THE OVERALL VISUAL IMPACT.

You will NOT be able to do this on a few sheets of typing paper. Start thinking about the material that you need NOW. Start finding your material NOW.

Presentation of Your Favourite or Most Important Decade

Each of you will have to orally present your favourite decade. Whichever decade speaks the most to you about Identity, Heroes and your chosen “Cultural” field – that is the one you will tell us about. This will be a simple, short presentation of the importance of that decade in your mind. Two – three minutes maximum.

REMEMBER

This is about Canada’s history. You must try your best to focus on events and people from this country.

Due Date for the Timeline and the Presentation: Friday, January 20, 2012
