I. Grammar/Writing

1. Be able to explain/identify/create/define thesis, topic sentence, evidence

2. Explain the parts of a perfect paragraph sammich

3. Create/identify correct in-text citations

II. Vocabulary

a. Write the stem and meaning for each stem unit 5 times each

b. Be able to define the following bell work words:

i. Negligible, efface, sporadic, fortuitous, clandestine, pompous, fluctuate, incessant

III. Literature

a. Poetry:

i. Define and create an example of alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia, imagery, rhyme scheme, rhythm, hyperbole, allusion, symbolism,

ii. Explain the major characteristics of the following: ode, elegy, free verse, spoken word

b. Julius Caesar

i. Be able to describe Caesar, Mark Antony, Brutus, Cassius, Soothsayer, and Casca

ii. Summarize major plot elements of the play

iii. Define ethos, pathos, and logos and explain how each is used in the speeches of Antony and Brutus.

iv. Define/explain the effectiveness of repetition, rhetorical question, loaded language, anecdote, counterargument/refutation

v. Define/explain/give an example of the following rhetorical fallacies: unfalsifiability, ad hominem, begging the question, red herring, unsubstantiation, straw man

vi. You are responsible for knowing the basic plot and comprehension material for Acts I-III.

IV. Cold Texts

a. Part of your exam will test your ability to use the skills learned during the year. You will have one poem, one non-fiction piece, and one proofreading piece as a part of your test.

b. A portion of your midterm will include the pre-test writing questions from the beginning of the year—you will need to use RACES in order to get a top score

i. What does it mean to be a revolutionary? How do idealists and realists react differently to change or revolution?

1. Your essay must incorporate:

a. An effective thesis statement and topic sentences

b. Correctly cited specific evidence

c. Parallel structure

d. Use each of the following types of clauses: dependent, independent, relative, and adjective clauses to add interest and meaning

e. Correct use of commas and at least one semicolon

f. Observe proper syntax and conventions of Standard American English
