College Planning Project

College Planning Project

Congratulations! You have graduated from Humble High School. Your next step is to plan your annual college budget so that you can determine if you have enough money to attend the school of your choice. If you fall short you may have to look into student loans, work study programs, scholarships, etc.

This project is due_____________________. No late projects will be accepted!

The project is broken down into 3 parts. Part 1 will require the use of the internet and printed documentation. Part 2 and 3 will require a field trip. You will need to go shopping to pick out your items you wish to take with you. Do not use the internet for these portions of your project – it is not an exercise to see how much printer ink you can use.

Part I. – College Information

This information must be obtained from the school website. What you will need to complete this section of the project:

1. The name and location of the 4 year college/ University you will attend.

2. Your completed college application. (We will give you the Apply Texas College Application…UNLESS you plan on using a college OUTSIDE of Texas…then you will need to print the application on your own.

3. Scholarship information/application for one scholarship that you qualify for. Use the Humble HS website; look on the counselor’s page.

4. The current tuition and fees for a 15 hour class load for each semester.

5. Book cost--use $100 estimate per class for textbooks per semester

6. Dorm Cost: You will be living on campus in the dorms your Freshman year.

7. Meal Plan: You must purchase some type of meal plan for the college for your daily meals..

8. Additional Meals and Snacks: You also need to plan on the meals and snacks that are not covered under the plan such as weekend meals and snacks. This MUST BE a monthly itemized grocery list of all food you will purchase for the month.

9. SAT/ACT and GPA scores required for admission. What does your school require? I don’t need the cost of taking the SAT.

10. Part I will requires an itemized semester and yearly total.

Part II – Additional Monthly Expenses

These are reoccurring monthly expenses you will encounter.

1. Toiletries and Health Care– This includes all items for personal grooming. You will need more than one bottle of shampoo and more than one bar of soap for the year. You will need a monthly itemized shopping list total for toiletries

(EX: toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, soap, razors, toiletpaper, person products)

2. Health Care – dorms are germy places and you need to plan on getting sick at least once per semester. It will probably be around finals time. You will need to go to the doctor and get a prescription and some over the counter medication. You will need a ONE TIME fee per Semester total for a doctor visit and prescription & over-the-counter meds.

3. Entertainment – As a college freshman. You will not spend every Saturday night studying so put in some money for going out. (movies, club, ect.)

4. Clothing – This should include an initial shopping expedition with your parents as well as the additional ones you will make once you get to school. You will want some school spirit shirts.

5. Laundry and dry cleaning expenses. You will have to do laundry before Thanksgiving. Find out how much it costs. This includes soap, washing and drying in the machines. Figure $1.50 to wash and 1.00 to dry. You will need more than one box of detergent for the year. Figure out how many loads per week, per month, per semester and per year and you will need to budget accordingly.

6. Cell Phone—You are not on your parents plan. You must price a plan for yourself. Provide documentation. Print a phone plan (Ex: Cricket, Sprint, ATT)

7. Part II will require an itemized monthly expense total for numbers 1-5 separately as well as a yearly total. This may require you to get a grand total and divide by 10 months.

Section III

This section includes items that are generally purchased only one time.

1. Appliances – the cost for a dorm sized refrigerator, microwave, alarm clock, stereo and television set. If you drink coffee then you need to add a coffee pot. If you need to buy a new hair dryer, straightener, curling iron, etc. then include these items also.

2. Linens- you will a mattress pad, sheets, towels (more than one) comforter and pillows.

3. Decorating – you will need at least these items to start with but may add more if you like; Trash can, desk lamps, hangers, picture frames and something for the walls – bulletin boards or posters.

4. Spring Break – are you planning on coming home or taking a big trip? Also include any other expenses for those times when you are not in school.

5. Office/School supplies. In this section you will need to purchase a computer and budget for paper, composition books, pens, pencils, highlighters etc. This is usually a one time expense for the fall semester.

6. Transportation: You will need to figure out how much you will spend for each semester in transportation costs….such as: How much it will cost you to get home and back during the holidays/vacation days when school is closed. Gas, if you’re driving, airfare, bus, train…ect. ROUNDTRIP COSTS. Figure Gas at $2.50 per gallon and figure the mileage if you are driving. Since you will be living on campus, you will probably walk or ride a bike around school campus.

7. Part III requires an itemized total for items 1-6, separately

This is a budgeting project. It will require you to make informed, intelligent estimates of your expenses. This project should be realistic and reflect your spending habits and lifestyle. If you do not shop at Wal-Mart now, don’t assume you will next year.

This project must be in a typed, coherent format. You will also need dividers between each section. Sub-totals for semester and total expenses for the year will need to be clear.

Your last page must include:

Part 1 Total + Part 2 Total +Part 3 Total = Grand Yearly Total

All Projects Must Be Your Original Work. You may not reproduce, in part or whole, anyone else’s work from this or previous semesters! Doing so will result in a 0.
