Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

MAC UP – I always enjoy sharing the great things that are going on at MAC. You read about all our kids’ achievements each week. This week I want to celebrate our latest addition to our MAC programs. The MacArthur University Prep (MAC UP) is in its first year, but it is already growing as a program, and as great innovation in education. If you are not familiar with MAC UP, it is a magnet program designed to prepare future educators. However, it is more than just a teacher prep program. It is a new concept in the alignment between secondary and post-high school education. We currently have a cohort of sophomores who are the pioneer members if this innovative program. Next school year, they are the first group that will begin attending UTSA in the morning, taking university level courses that will provide them with 24 hours of highly transferable college hours. So how is this different from early college high school programs that currently exist? The primary difference is that we are partnered with a four year University, The University of Texas at San Antonio. The hours our students accumulate are not junior college hours, but fully accredited university hours. The other innovation is the blending of high school and university. The UTSA courses are taught by UTSA faculty. In addition, the unique relationship that we have with UTSA will allow our students to continue their education with UTSA if they so desire. In effect, they will be fully enrolled UTSA students while they are still at MAC, and can continue their enrollment at UTSA once they graduate from MAC without any further admission application. This is a totally new and unique concept. The most exciting part of this program is that it is still developing and new opportunities and ideas are still being proposed for our students. It also is a program that we believe will help us strengthen the teacher pipeline by growing our own teachers and bring them right back to NEISD. We are still enrolling incoming 9th grade students into the program. However, by popular demand, we are opening a limited cohort for current freshmen who will be sophomores next year. If you are interested in getting your child into this unique and dynamic program, there will be informational sessions on April 24th at 6:30 p.m. in the MAC Auditorium. I want to extend special thanks to Dr, Gottardy and our Executive Staff for all of their support and encouragement. With their help, MAC is definitely on the way UP! Go Brahmas!

Here is all the news for the week:

MAC NHS - NHS Service Hours Due Dates – Spring 2019

Events for “in” hours are posted in and announced via our Remind accounts. Keep in mind that half of your hours need to be “in” (arranged by NHS) and the other half have to be “out” (arranged by you). Please remember that once a member signs up for an event, attendance is expected. This will also help prevent non-completion of required hours.

NHS SENIORS:

Senior NHS members in good standing will be given the opportunity to purchase the NHS stole to wear at graduation and to have their name printed in the program highlighting this honor. Good standing implies that all four NHS pillars have been met which include Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service; all service hours for the 2018-2019 year must be completed and reported by the deadline: April 15th. A Google Form has been shared with the senior members via Remind on Tuesday April 2 to let me know if, upon verification of hours, the NHS stole for graduation will be bought.

NHS JUNIORS and SOPHOMORES:

ACTIVITIES -

MAC THEATER – Our amazing Brahmas will perform their production of A Lie of the Mind in Regional competition on Monday, April 15th. The competition will be held at Highlands High School. Performances will begin at 1 pm, and MAC will be the 4th school to perform so they should go on about 3:45 pm.

A Lie of the Mind is a dark comedy/tragedy concerning two families who are connected by the marriage of Jake, the son of one family, to Beth who is the daughter of the other. The playwright, Sam Shepard, one of America’s most forward dramatists, has created a play that is filled with poetry, action and high stakes. Characters mistake the living for the dead, one brother for another brother, sons for fathers, sisters for wives - even, at one loony point, a man for a deer. Sometimes the people can't remember their own identities: Beth and her mother both mistake themselves for a lobotomized family matriarch. The play concerns mature content but is rooted in the heartache and desire for love.

If you are available to get out and support our Brahmas, please take the time. If they make it past this competition, their next stop is the State competition in Austin! Go Brahma OAP!

MAC UIL ACADEMIC - This past Saturday MacArthur UIL Academic District champions and medalists from Ready Writing, Feature Writing, News Writing, Accounting, Spelling & Vocabulary, and Literary Criticism earned the right to compete in the UIL Region IV Championships held at UTSA. Our 27-6A students saw competition ranging from District 25-6A in Austin all the way to District 32-6A in the Rio Grande Valley. We’re proud of all these competitors, especially Charles Guymon who placed 7th in Accounting, Lukas Meier who medaled as 4th place in Spelling & Vocabulary, Jessica Harden and DeLaney Rayner who medaled as 4th and 6th place respectively in Feature Writing, Karen Mendoza who earned a silver medal New Writing and Summer Farrens who earned a silver medal in Ready Writing. Also congratulations to the journalism team for earning 2nd place team in the region! Karen Mendoza and Summer Farrens will now represent MacArthur at the State Championship in May, where each is one of only 12 writers competing for the title in their events. Thanks to all of our Brahmas for making MacArthur so proud! Go Brahma UIL!

MAC SOFTBALL – On Tuesday night, our Lady Brahmas were back on the diamond, taking on Madison. In their first meeting, the Brahmas got a big win, and Tuesday would be no different. They opened up with 4 runs in the in the first inning, and added 1 run in the second inning. The big inning came in the 4th, when our Lady Brahmas put up 10 runs. Our Lady Brahmas’ big bats were led by Madison Collins, Katelyn Esparza, Ivey Zamora, Taylor Medina, and Sarah Montes, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning. The inning included a home run right at the scoreboard for Madison Collins. Elizabeth Montes didn't allow a single run and struck out 8, as our Lady Brahmas defeated Madison 15-0.

Friday was a big game for our Lady Brahmas as they went up against Reagan. In their first meeting, our Lady Brahmas took a close win over the Lady Rattlers. Our Brahmas got things started in the first inning. Brahmas scored one run when Sarah Montes singled. They added one run in the 3rd inning and held the lead until the 6th inning. That’s when Reagan got some big breaks and added 5 runs to take a 6 to 2 lead. In the final inning, the Brahmas added 2 runs to close the gap. With the tying runs on base, Reagan managed to close out the inning as the Brahmas went down 4 to 6. Our Lady Brahmas lost despite out-hitting Reagan nine to five. Madison Collins and Taylor Medina each managed multiple hits for Brahmas.

Our Lady Brahmas are now 10 and 3 in District and 26 and 6 overall. This Tuesday they will be at NE East to take on Lee at 7 pm in their final game of the regular season. Come on out and help our Lady Brahmas close out district and move on to the playoffs. Go Brahma Softball!

MAC BASEBALL – On Tuesday April 9th, our Brahmas traveled to South San to take on the Bobcats. The Brahmas opened up strong and took an early lead. However, a late surge by South San put them ahead late in the game, and the Brahmas took a 1 run loss to South San.

On Friday the Brahmas had an early game at BAC against Johnson. Once again, the Brahmas played hard and had some great effort from all of our boys. However, Johnson was fired up, and they took the win over our Brahmas. Our Brahmas had a non-district game on Saturday in New Braunfels, but severe weather required that it be cancelled. In spite of some tough games, our Brahmas continue to play with a lot of class and determination, and I am very proud of each one of them.

Our Brahmas are now 4 and 6 in district. This week the Brahmas will be at the North East Sports Park on Tuesday at 7:15 pm to take on Churchill. Then on Thursday, they will be at BAC to close out the week against Madison at 7:15 pm. Come on out and cheer for the Brahmas as they continue their district run. Go Brahma Baseball!
