Regression Analysis

To delve further into the results obtained in the correlation analysis, OLS regression analysis is performed to determine those factors most associated with both Texas TWO-STEP Interdisciplinary Studies majors and NON-TWO-STEP Interdisciplinary Studies majors at UT-Arlington as measured by cumulative grade point average at UT-Arlington. OLS regression analysis allows for tests of statistical significance for the variables of interest while controlling for the influence on or interactions between the variables.

First, the following OLS regression model is estimated for the NON-TWO-STEP Interdisciplinary Studies majors at UT-Arlington:

UTAGPA = α1 + β1Age + β2Gender + β3Asian + β4Black + β5Hispanic + β6Transfer + β7BachDegree + β8UTAHours

where,

UTAGPA is the student’s cumulative GPA at UT-Arlington at the time of collection;

α1 = Intercept term;

β1 = Coefficient on the explanatory variable AGE representing the age of the students;

β2 = Coefficient on the explanatory variable Gender where Gender is a dummy variable coded 1 for a female student 0 for a male student;

β3 = Coefficient on the explanatory variable Asian where Asian is a dummy variable coded 1 for an Asian student and 0 otherwise;

β4 = Coefficient on the explanatory variable Black where Black is a dummy variable coded 1 for a Black student and 0 otherwise;

β5 = Coefficient on the explanatory variable Hispanic where Hispanic is a dummy variable coded 1 for an Hispanic student and 0 otherwise;

β6 = Coefficient on the explanatory variable Transfer were Transfer is a dummy variable coded 1 for a transfer student and 0 for new freshman student and summer transient students;

β7 = Coefficient on the explanatory variable BachDegree where BachDegree is coded 1 if the student has achieved a Bachelor’s Degree at the time of collection and coded 0 otherwise;

β8 = Coefficient on the explanatory variable UTAHours where UTAHours represents the number of hours the student has completed at UT-Arlington.
