Clerkship NBME Grading Tables 2023-2024

Background

The methods for assigning final grades in clerkships for MS3 students in 2022-2023 academic year will utilize a multitiered grading system that requires students to meet minimum passing scores on major grading components (Clinical Assessment, NBME Subject Exam and OSCE). The data in this appendix show the cutoff numbers for passing each clerkship NBME.

Methods

Percentile data are obtained from annual reports from the NBME for each of the six clerkship subject exams. For each new academic year, the last three years of complete annual data are collected, thus for academic year 2022-2023, the data utilized are from 2019-2020, 2020-2021 and 2021-2022. Percentile data from each quarter for these three years were collected and averaged to obtain the mean percentile score for each quarter within each clerkship. The scores corresponding to the 10th percentiles were identified and tabulated (see tables 1-6). In order to assign percentile scores for all students, complete percentile ranging tables were generated and are shown in tables 7-12. As shown in the tables, data from quarter 1 will be used to assign percentiles in clerkship periods 1-3, while data from quarter 3 will be used for clerkship periods 4-6.

Off cycle students

The Offices of Academic and Student Affairs will ensure that percentile rankings for students who are off cycle will be assigned according to the specific clerkship period they are completing, rather than the actual period within the annual academic calendar. It should be noted that this system could result in students obtaining the same numerical score on a clerkship NBME during the same period being eligible for different final grades.

Remediation

Any student who fails a clerkship NBME is expected to retake that NBME as remediation. Successful remediation requires achieving a score that ranks at the minimal percentile for passing (i.e., the 10th percentile) or above. The scale used for determining this value will be the scale used in periods 3-6, irrespective of when the remediation exam is taken.

Tables Updated: April 14, 2023 2023-2024

Table 1-6: Minimum passing score (equated percent correct) for each clerkship. The clerkship number refers to the clerkship for the individual student. Note that the Family Medicine NBME has two reported scores, one for the Core (C) exam and one for the Core + Chronic Care + Musculoskeletal exam (CCM). The higher of these two scores is used to determine the student grade.

Clerkship Family Medicine Internal Medicine Obstetrics & Gynecology Pediatrics Psychiatry Surgery

Clerkships 1-3 64 (C), 65 (CCM)

61 67 66 75 61

Clerkships 4-6 67 (C), 68 (CCM)

64 69 69 76 64

Comparison to 2021-2022: The minimum passing scores are unchanged in both clerkship periods for Internal Medicine, Ob/Gyn, Pediatrics and Surgery. In Family Medicine, the minimum passing score is unchanged for the Core exam and decreased by one point in both clerkship periods for the Core + Chronic Care + Musculoskeletal Exam. In Psychiatry, the minimum passing score increased by one point in clerkships 1-3
