 7th Grade Texas HistoryMr. Herrera7th grade Texas Historymherrera041@Room A-116Phone 210-662-2210Office Hours M-F 7:30-3:30 COURSE DESCRIPTION: In Grade 7, students study the history of Texas from early times to the present.Students examine the full scope of Texas history, including Natural Texas and its People; Age of Contact; Spanish Colonial; Mexican National; Revolution and Republic; Early Statehood; Texas in the Civil War and Reconstruction; Cotton, Cattle, and Railroads; Age of Oil; Texas in the Great Depression and World War II; Civil Rights and Conservatism; and Contemporary Texas eras. The focus in each era is on key individuals, events, and issues and their impact. Students use primary and secondary sources to acquire information about Texas.PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITES: 6th grade Social Studies World CulturesOBJECTIVES: As a result of this course, you will be able to:History. The student understands how individuals, events, and issues through the Mexican National Era shaped the history of Texas.?History. The student understands how individuals, events, and issues related to the Texas Revolution shaped the history of Texas.Geography. The student uses geographic tools to collect, analyze, and interpret data.?Geography. The student understands the characteristics, distribution, and migration of population in Texas in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.Economics. The student understands the factors that caused Texas to change from an agrarian to an urban ernment. The student understands the basic principles reflected in the Texas Constitution.Citizenship. The student understands the importance of the expression of different points of view in a democratic society.Culture. The student understands the concept of diversity within unity in Texas.REQUIRED TEXTS AND RESOURCES: School Provided Text BooksATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY: Students are expected to be on time and in their seats with all materials ready to work by the tardy bell, those who are not in their seats will be counted tardy. Students who are tardy 15 days or more will receive a written referral and 3 days of lunch detention. If the student is tardy 25 days or more, they will receive a referral and two days of ISS (In School Suspension). Students will also not be able to attend school extracurricular activities such as sporting events, dances, rallies, etc. Student Prepared for Class: Students are expected to be ready to work with their supplies, and textbook at the time of the tardy bell. Students who continually show up without their pencils or journals ready to work will be directed to the classroom consequences. If there is a need for supplies for your student please communicate this to me and I will do my best to help. COMMUNICATION: Students and parents can reach me through the school email, phone, class dojo, and google classroom. Be sure to communicate any future absences and make up work requests. CELL PHONES, COMPUTERS, AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES: As per JISD policy, students are not allowed to have their cellphones out and operational during school hours. This counts for in the hall, morning gym staging area, or in class. Students should also not have their earbuds in and operational. I will collect the cell phone if there is a violation of this policy. If the student complies immediately, I will return the phone at the end of the day. If they do not comply an administrator will be called, the phone collected and a $15 fine assessed to retrieve the phone from the front office. FOOD AND DRINK: The only drink allowed is clear water in a bottle with a closed top. No food, or colored liquid or sodas will be allowed. If there are certain dietary restrictions please advise the front office and we can accommodate your student. ACCOMMODATIONS: Please refer to the JISD student handbook or the front office. COURSE REQUIREMENTSGRADING: 7th Grade Texas History Graded WeightsMajor Test/Projects 40% Daily work/Quiz 50% Homework 10% Semester Exam 10%90-100% = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C < 69% = FASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION: Daily assignments are to be stapled, glued, or taped in the student’s journal in order to receive full credit for the work. The journals will be placed in the class assigned crate. Assignments that are not in compliance or missing will not be graded and given an M for missing.LATE WORK: Please refer to the JISD student handbook for the grading policy in regards to late or missing work.RESUBMISSIONS: Students who fail an assignment(any) will have three days from the date the graded assignment is returned to make corrections.
