Service of Tenebrae

April 10, 2020

Welcome to our friends from Trinity UCC, Telford and Zwingli UCC, Souderton

All are welcome here at Emmanuel regardless of your faith affiliation.

All parts of today's worship service are printed in this bulletin, including words for the songs. The service is being streamed on-line and recorded, with only necessary people

This is a service of Tenebrae, the Latin word for "darkness.", the Service of Darkness, is a devotional and meditative service held to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus, a time for adoration of the Lamb of God and his sacrifice for us. The darkness in the church recalls the darkness which surrounded the cross and covered the earth from noon until three o'clock on the day Jesus died.

SEVEN CANDLES

There are seven candles in the front of the church. Throughout the service the candles are put out and the lights are dimmed representing the extinguishing of the life of Jesus. Near the close of the service, a candle is returned to the altar as we remember the hope of the promised resurrection.

SILENCE

In keeping with the solemnity of the day, there is no pre-service or post-service music. The service begins in silence and ends in silence. The altar area and cross will remain on video for 15 minutes following the end of the service to allow time for meditation and reverence of the cross.

The stillness and darkness of tonight are intended to contrast with the bright and glorious celebration of Easter morning.

Introduction to the Day

The Sayings of Jesus on the cross (sometimes called the Seven Last Words from the Cross) are seven expressions biblically attributed to Jesus during his crucifixion. Traditionally, the brief sayings have been called "words". A person's final articulated words said prior to death or as death approaches generally are taken to have particular significance. These seven sayings, being "last words", may provide a way to understand what was ultimately important to this man who was dying on the cross. Since the 16th century, The Seven Last Words from the Cross have become an integral part of Good Friday liturgy in various Christian traditions.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Almighty God, look with loving mercy on your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed, to be given over to the hands of sinners, and to suffer death on the cross; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

Amen.

READING ? Isaiah 52:13 ? 53:12

See, my servant shall prosper; he shall be exalted and lifted up, and shall be very high.

Just as there were many who were astonished at him --so marred was his appearance, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of mortals-- so he shall startle many nations; kings shall shut their mouths because of him; for that which had not been told them they shall see, and that which they had not heard they shall contemplate.

Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

He was despised and rejected by others; a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity; and as one from whom others hide their faces he was despised, and we held him of no account.

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.

But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people.

They made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.

Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him with pain.

When you make his life an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days; through him the will of the Lord shall prosper.

Out of his anguish he shall see light; he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge.

The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.

Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

HYMN

O Sacred Head, Now Wounded (351)

1 O sacred head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down, now scornfully surrounded with thorns, thine only crown; O sacred head, what glory, what bliss till now was thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call thee mine.

2 How pale thou art with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn; how does thy face now languish, which once was bright as morn! Thy grief and bitter passion were all for sinners' gain; mine, mine was the transgression, but thine the deadly pain.

3 What language shall I borrow to thank thee, dearest friend, for this thy dying sorrow, thy pity without end? Oh, make me thine forever, and should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to thee.

3 Lord, be my consolation; shield me when I must die; remind me of thy passion when my last hour draws nigh. These eyes, new faith receiving, from thee shall never move; for all who die believing die safely in thy love

THE SEVEN WORDS FROM THE CROSS

(Each of the Words includes a reading, reflection and hymn, during which a candle is extinguished)

The First Word - Luke 23:32-34 Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said,

"Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots to divide his clothing.

Hymn Your Heart, O God, Is Grieved (602)

1 Leader: O God, Father in heaven, have mercy upon us.

All Your heart, O God, is grieved, we know, by ev'ry evil, ev'ry woe; upon your cross-forsaken Son our death is laid, our peace is won.

2 Leader: O Son of God, redeemer of the world, have mercy upon us.

All Your arms extend, O Christ, to save from sting of death and grasp of grave; your scars before the Father move his heart to mercy at such love.

3 Leader O God, Holy Spirit, have mercy upon us.

All O lavish Giver, come to aid the children that your word has made. Now make us grow and help us pray; bring joy and comfort, come to stay.

3

The Second Word - Luke 23: 35 - 43

The Third Word ? John 19: 23 - 27

And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!" The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!" There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews."

One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, "Are you not the Messiah?[ Save yourself and us!" But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong."

Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."

He replied,

"Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier. They also took his tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. 24 So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see who will get it." This was to fulfill what the scripture says, "They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots." And that is what the soldiers did.

Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother,

"Woman, here is your son."

Then he said to the disciple,

"Here is your mother."

And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

Hymn Jesus, Remember Me (616)

Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

(repeat several times)

Hymn Lamb of God (336)

1 Your only Son no sin to hide But You have sent Him from Your side To walk upon this guilty sod And to become the Lamb of God

Chorus Oh Lamb of God sweet Lamb of God I love the holy Lamb of God Oh wash me in His precious blood My Jesus Christ the Lamb of God

2 Your gift of love they crucified They laughed and scorned Him as He died The humble King they named a fraud And sacrificed the Lamb of God (Chorus)

3 I was so lost I should have died But You have brought me to Your side To be led by Your staff and rod And to be called a lamb of God (Chorus)

4

The Fourth Word ? Matthew 27: 45 - 49

From noon on, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And about three o'clock Jesus cried with a loud voice,

"Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?"

that is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, "This man is calling for Elijah." At once one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink. But the others said, "Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him."

Hymn Ah, Holy Jesus (349)

1 Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended that we to judge thee have in hate pretended? By foes derided, by thine own rejected, O most afflicted.

2 Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon thee? Alas, my treason, Jesus, hath undone thee. 'Twas I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied thee; I crucified thee.

3 Lo, the Good Shepherd for the sheep is offered; the slave hath sinned, and the Son hath suffered; for our atonement, while we nothing heeded, God interceded.

4 For me, kind Jesus, was thine incarnation, thy mortal sorrow, and thy life's oblation; thy death of anguish and thy bitter passion, for my salvation.

5 Therefore, kind Jesus, since I cannot pay thee, I do adore thee, and will ever pray thee; think on thy pity and thy love unswerving, not my deserving.

The Fifth Word ? John 19: 28 ? 29

After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture),

"I am thirsty." A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth.

Hymn Stay With Me (348)

Stay with me, remain here with me,

Watch and pray. Watch and pray.

(repeat several times)

5

The Sixth Word ? John 19: 30

When Jesus had received the wine, he said,

"It is finished."

Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Hymn Beneath the Cross of Jesus (338)

1 Beneath the cross of Jesus, I long to take my stand; the shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land, a home within a wilderness, a rest upon the way, from the burning of the noontide heat and burdens of the day.

2 Upon the cross of Jesus, my eye at times can see the very dying form of one who suffered there for me. And from my contrite heart, with tears, two wonders I confess: the wonder of his glorious love and my unworthiness.

3 I take, O cross, your shadow for my abiding place; I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of his face; content to let the world go by, to know no gain nor loss, my sinful self my only shame, my glory all, the cross.

The Seventh Word ? Luke 23: 44 - 48

It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, while the sun's light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said,

"Father, into your hands I commend my spirit."

Having said this, he breathed his last. When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, "Certainly this man was innocent." And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts.

Hymn Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross (335)

1 Jesus, keep me near the cross, there's a precious fountain; free to all, a healing stream flows from Calv'ry's mountain.

Refrain In the cross, in the cross be my glory ever; till my ransomed soul shall find rest beyond the river.

2 Near the cross, a trembling soul, love and mercy found me; there the bright and morning star sheds its beams around me. Refrain

3 Near the cross! O Lamb of God, bring its scenes before me; help me walk from day to day with its shadow o'er me. Refrain

4 Near the cross I'll watch and wait, hoping, trusting ever, till I reach the golden strand just beyond the river. Refrain

READING ? John 19: 31 ? 42

HYMN Were You There (353)

Since it was the day of Preparation, the Jews did not want the bodies left on the cross during the sabbath, especially because that sabbath was a day of great solemnity. So, they asked Pilate to have the legs of the crucified men broken and the bodies removed. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out. (He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth.) These things occurred so that the scripture might be fulfilled, "None of his bones shall be broken." And again another passage of scripture says, "They will look on the one whom they have pierced."

After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, though a secret one because of his fear of the Jews, asked Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission; so, he came and removed his body. Nicodemus, who had at first come to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds. They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it with the spices in linen cloths, according to the burial custom of the Jews.

Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified, and in the garden, there was a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. And so, because it was the Jewish day of Preparation, and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

1 Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

2 Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?

3 Were you there when they pierced him in the side? Were you there when they pierced him in the side? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they pierced him in the side?

4 Were you there when the sun refused to shine? Were you there when the sun refused to shine? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when the sun refused to shine?

5 Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?

(A time of silence follows the hymn)

THE CANDLE OF THE VIGIL

(A single candle is placed on the altar recalling the hope that we have in the promised resurrection)

THE CLOSING OF THE TOMB

THE TOLLING OF THE BELL (33 times recalling the traditional age at which Jesus died)

After the candle is placed on the altar, the lights will be brought back up. At this time, you are free to remain and meditate on the sacrifice at the cross.

The video will continue to stream for another fifteen minutes.
