Unit X: Annotated translation
Interpreting – Community scenario #26 Professional / Patient
➢ A French GP has requested the presence of an interpreter for a British business(wo)man.
I. Docteur: Bonjour. Asseyez-vous. Alors, dites-moi… Qu’est-ce qui ne va pas?
1. Patient: Good morning. The problem is that I can’t sleep. Every night, I’m going to bed, lying there. For ages. And I just can’t get to sleep.
II. Docteur: Que faites-vous, dans ce cas-là?
2. Patient: I try to empty my head of thoughts, I’ll toss and turn, maybe turn the light on and start reading a book, and sometimes take a sleeping tablet… If I’m lucky, I’ll eventually drop off and get a few hours’ sleep…
III. Docteur: Je vois. Vous arrivez donc à dormir un petit peu. En moyenne, combien d’heures par nuit dormez-vous?
3. Patient: Four, say. If I’m lucky.
IV. Docteur: D’accord. Je vais vous prendre la tension. Remontez votre manche, s’il vous plaît… C’est cela… Voilà. Votre tension artérielle est bonne. Vous buvez de l’alcool?
4. Patient: The only time I drink, it’s so I can get to sleep more easily…
V. Docteur: Il y a quelque chose qui vous inquiète, qui vous stresse peut-être?
5. Patient: Just the usual: the girlfriend, too much work, bills, not enough money…
VI. Docteur: Je peux vous prescrire des somnifères assez forts. Mais je vous conseille aussi de pratiquer la détente.
6. Patient: Thank you, doctor. What do you mean by ‘practise relaxation’?
VII. Docteur: Je vous donne là un petit dépliant avec des astuces anti-stress. L’interprète pourra vous les lire avant de partir…
7. Patient: Thank you very much, doctor.
