MEMORIAL SERVICE OPENING ADDRESS AND MC SPEECH NOTES
GOOD MORNING MY NAME IS JOHN BERTINI AND ON BEHALF OF THE 104 SIGNAL SQUADRON 2011 REUNION COMMITTEE. I WOULD LIKE TO WELCOMEOUR GUESTS OF HONOUR FELLOW VETERANS THEIR WIVES OR PARTNERS; AND LADIES AND GENTLEMEN TO THIS MORNINGS MEMORIAL AND REDEDICATION SERVICE.
ITS A LITTLE OVER 5 YEARS SINCE WE LAST GATHERED HERE TO DEDICATE THIS MEMORIAL IN COMMEMORATION OF THOSE MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN CORP OF SIGNALS WHO SERVED IN THE VIETNAM WAR. WE TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO CALL TO MIND THE MEMBERS OF THE CORP WHO HAVE FALLEN IN THE VIETNAM WAR OR SUBSEQUENT CONFLICTS OR WHO HAVE SINCE PASSSED ON. IN PARTICULAR, IT'S AN OPPORTUNITY TO REMEMBER OUR MATES WHO WERE HERE WITH US AT THE LAST REUNION BUT ARE NO LONGER WITH US NOW. I MIGHT ADD THESE INCLUDE SEVERAL MEN WHOM I REGARD AS MY CONTEMPORARIES AND HAVE SUCCUMBED TO ILLNESS RATHER THAN INCREASING OLD AGE. WE CAN ALSO CALL TO MIND THOSE WHO HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO ATTEND THE REUNION BECAUSE OF ILLNESS BUT ARE WITH US IN SPIRIT.

OUR GUEST SPEAKER THIS MORNING IS COL PETER DIDDAMS RETD. PETER WAS THE RADIO TROOP COMMANDER AT NUI DAT IN 1969. HE SPENT 25 YEARS IN THE ARMY RETIRING AS COLONEL. HE SPENT A FURTHER 20 YEARS IN INDUSTRY AND GOVERNMENT AND IS NOW ACTIVELY RETIRED. MANY OF YOU HAVE SWAPPED STORIES WITH PETER OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS AND IT WAS PROBABLY A BIT OF AN EYE OPENER FOR PETER AS TO SOME OF THE THING HIS RADIO OPERATORS GOT UP TO.
