LAB SAFETY RULES AND CONTRACT

LAB SAFETY RULES AND CONTRACT

9th Grade Physics - Science

Mr. Cabanting Room G203

Labs are essential to learning and enjoying science. Our labs may also occur outside the classroom. Labs can, however, be dangerous if not approached with maturity and respect. Every class will discuss the following rules and be warned of consequences for not following them. Unsafe behavior will not be tolerated.

Consequences For Breaking Lab Safety Rules Include:

• Minus 5 points on a lab grade – “practicing safety” is a state science content standard

• Referral to vice principal

• Student may be denied the right to participate in a lab until a parent, administrator, student, teacher conference occurs and all parties agree to a behavior contract.

Lab Rules:

1. Never begin a lab or touch equipment until you are instructed to do so by your teacher.

2. Listen to, read and follow all directions – each lab will have specific rules. Pre-labs should be

completed before starting any lab (directions read ahead of time).

3. Never play around in the classroom during a lab.

4. Wear goggles anytime anyone in the room is handling glass and/or chemicals.

5. Inspect glassware for chips and cracks. Let your teacher know if you find any.

6. Never handle heated glassware directly.

7. Inform the teacher immediately of any accidents and/or spills.

8. No food or drink is allowed in a lab classroom.

9. Never taste or sniff any substance during a chemistry lab.

10. Clean up all materials/counter tops and wash your hands after every lab.

My child and I have gone through the course syllabus and understand the expectations of the class. At any point in time, I understand that I am able to check my child’s progress in the class by logging on to the online grade book or contacting the teacher. I understand that my child will be responsible for ensuring that he makes the best out of his opportunities for learning in the classroom. I understand that should my child not follow any of these expectations that there will be consequences. I also understand that these guidelines are set up to optimize the learning environment for my child, and if not followed, may lead to a failing grade for the class.

As the teacher, I will ensure that your child is in a positive and safe learning environment. I will ensure that your child is exposed to a variety of teaching methods so that all learners (visual, kinesthetic, logical, etc.) can succeed in my class. I will ensure that all students have the ability to create and personalize their learning in my classroom. I will ensure that students get multiple opportunities to show that they have learned the lesson goals. And more importantly, I will listen to your child’s needs to ensure that they succeed in my classroom.

We have thoroughly read the course syllabus and understand all the expectations and any consequences of my misbehaviors in Mr. Cabanting’s class.
